'Mumsnet hijacked by sex discussions' - Telegraph article, your views?

Hi all,

There is an article in The Telegraph today discussing the "risqué underbelly" of Mumsnet, and claiming that the site is "being hijacked by women looking to share steamy details of their private lives, leading to complaints from mothers looking for serious advice."

Justine has commented in the article, saying: "Happily it seems some mothers do still have time for their sex lives and we're pleased to provide a go-to destination for straight answers when you need to ask life's important but often embarrassing questions."

What are your thoughts on this?

So, we're supposed to get to it and please our menfolk while we're still recovering from giving birth, but god forbid we should talk about it? Hmm

I wish the press would make their minds up about what it is mums are actually supposed to be like, I mean obviously I ignore them, but I'd prefer to not have to see which new opinion I'm supposed to be ignoring this week.

Telegraph hijacked by lack of actual news? Good lord. The media really is eating itself.

Lol @ the "seedy topics". Really? This what the Telegraph is worried about? Sounds more like a DM article. Must be a really slow news day.

So we are either a woman or a mother?
Hmm.

What a pile of crock. Like Scheriously says, it must be a very slow news day.

Or a cheap way of having a dig at a website that's mainly populated by women...

The article is a load of tripe.

I haven't seen any complaints of the pearl clutching nature, and that thread was only minute snippet of among an enormous list of threads/topics/subjects.

The only thing some posters were disgruntled about was that the site was limping along for a few hours because of all the sudden attention.

Completely agree this sounds like a pearl-clutching Daily Fail article. I don't think it makes a single valid point, and the topics it mentions don't include bum sex are pretty tame really.

What a crap article. A bit late in the day to bring back the penis beaker event, isn't it?

Oh it's that whole virgin or whore thing again. To be honest, it's more like a Daily Mail article. We are all sexless mothers who wear pinnies and tie bows in our hair before DH comes home to find his dinner on the table.

Have any mothers looking for serious advice actually complained then? I've not noticed any. They don't have to read any threads that offend them, you know. It's not like we discuss sex positions in Breast and Bottle Feeding, is it? Do we?

What a terrible article!

Who the jeff made Joanna Baxter the queen of MN "Joanna Baxter said: "It's not what Mumsnet is there for. It should be a tool to help parents bring up their kids and not for people to talk about their sex lives." Confused

And the penis beaker thread was hardly "steamy" - it was comedic and a bit [boak] actually...

PiratePanda · 22/10/2013 14:46

The penis beaker thread was huge because it was so unusual, and also hilarious. It's not like the lukewarm about sex have to look very hard for sex-free threads (general housekeeping, anyone?)

Slow news day at the Torygraph, clearly

News flash: Mothers are sexual beings.

Oh the irony - a website all about conception, pregnancy, childbirth and raising children actually allows people to talk about the instigation of conception! Outrageous! Perhaps Telegraph reporters think it happens by immaculate conception.

I am off to warm DH's slippers by the fire, load his pipe for him, cook for a family of 20 using only a tea light, before quietly leaving him to enjoy his newspaper with a glass of whiskey and retiring to my bed early in the hope of a full night's sleep, ready to meet the new day with a smile on my face and a spring in my step because we only have sex on special occasions. And we never, ever speak about it.

How very dare we discuss sex on a forum which comprises of mainly women, appears we should only be interested in raising children.

the multi-million pound website

Really? Sorry to go OT, but really? Who's making multiple millions? And if you are please could you invest in a couple of new servers so the next time a thread goes viral the site doesn't grind to a stand still? And the end of those pesky messages about the site not responding!

who the hell is Joanna Baxter? Have I missed something? Is that Hullygully's alter ego???

There has been sex/ orgasm threads recently. MNers responses are polite or humorous mind your owns. There is an acknowledgement that sex threads may have a more sinister side to them. I agree with the slow news day. Also, if I had a genuine sex related problem I wouldn't hesitate to ask for advice on here. I think of mumsnet as Wikipedia on Nutella. Wink

Maybe Joanna Baxter is she who must not be named

.

Seriously though, what a load of old tosh. And if people dont like it, they can always close the webpage. Its not like they can't get help from somewhere else.

What a load of nonsense. I'm actually surprised how FEW threads on sex there are sometimes. And I've never seen a thread on 'how to please your man', ever.

Journalism at its worst. And I say that as a journalist.

what a load of rubbish. Mumsnet is just the same as it always is. A right old mix with sex forming a small proportion I would say. I can honestly say I have never seen a thread discussing a menage a trois. Far too seedy and more likely to be found on NetMums tbh.
