They're not keeping it from the south. One of the first sites to be drilled is in Balcombe. Apparently each delivery is costing £4000 in policing costs due to the protestors.

Sorry for my flippancy earlier, I've only just seen the news. Why am I not surprised it's Gidiots father in law involved, given his connection to fracking. You have to wonder why he (Gidiot) gave so much in the way of tax breaks to his fil fracking companies.

I always thought the main attraction of the NE was it's lack of Tory tossers idiots.
I knew when they came up with this Fracking idea that there would be some kind of idiotic idea that it was fine as long as it was outside of the Tory backyards.

I think that's one of the things that shocked Balcombe, wonky, it is very much a Tory stronghold, as are large areas of Sussex.
They never thought that a Conservative government would do this sort of thing in their area, along with the massive house-building schemes that keep being attempted.
The shock is real, they thought it would always impact somewhere else.

Balcombe residents trusted the local county council to act in the interests of the community - until recently there has been a lack of knowledge about fracking locally -but obviously people are more aware now. We have to get permission to prune our trees it was assumed that similar rules would be in place to prevent the process. Also in the 80s it was drilled conventionally and that came to nothing - so a lot of people thought that the same thing would happen again - people were not taking into account changes in technology which enable oil trapped in the rock to be released.

Please take a look at Frack Off.
Their website is a great starting point if only to see their location map - yes fracking is coming potentially in lots of areas of the UK, and the government is offering tax breaks to encourage oil companies to get stuck in.
Big deals are being negotiated as we write. If we don't want it we need to make our opinion known now.

Not sure I entirely understand the point of the tax breaks.

Are we worried the shale will wander off and be fracked in China, or something?

And if the price of hydrocarbons doesn't justify the cost of extraction without tax breaks, why are we extracting them now? They'll still be there in 20 years if there's a shortage and the price goes up.

It's not like oil companies are garage start-ups without a penny to invest in development, who need help during the lead time before extraction comes onstream.
