Bloody media still falsely claiming disabled people won't be hit by benefit cap

FFS. BBC bollocks today: "People on disability benefits will be exempt from the cap."

Utter crap. Here's the government's own website stating clear as day:

What's included
The cap will apply to the total amount that the people in your household get from the following benefits:
...
Employment and Support Allowance (unless you get the support component)
...
Severe Disablement Allowance

There are SOME disability benefits that make a household exempt from the cap, eg DLA/PIP, ESA Support component.

But many disabled people do not get these.

So many disabled people WILL be subject to the cap. And with DLA/PIP being withdrawn from over 25% of people who currently get it, there will shortly be even more.

Oh, and just for good measure, if someone in a household does get DLA/etc, if they are a disabled adult living with eg their parents, the household will be deemed two separate households, and the parents will be capped.

I have had it up to here with this constant spin that the welfare restructuring is not affecting the disabled. We are hugely affected, AND THE GOVT AND PRESS KEEP LYING ABOUT IT.

I suppose that's a sort of back-handed tribute to the British people, because the govt know such huge cuts to the disabled are completely unacceptable politically.

And they'd be voted out if everyone actually understood what they've done.

Ooops! I was saying ..,

We should all complain about that. The BBC should have higher standards. I'll email a complaint once back at my computer (on phone right now).

"You might be affected by the cap if you have any grown-up children who still live with you and they qualify for one of these benefits. This is because they won?t normally count as part of your household." (same link as above)

If your son is old enough to get ESA, he will be designated a separate household. You and your partner and any other children (not sure re ages) will therefore be subject to the cap of £26K for your total designated household. Unless you have one of the other exemptions, which you might.

Do look at the link to check.

Of course, you might not be receiving total household benefits above £26K. It will depend so much on family size, number of disabled people and where you live.

Put in correction but it hasn't been corrected, even though they've rewritten story to update.Angry

Formal complaint might be better.

There's a comments form on that particular BBC story, or can use this BBC page: BBC News website feedback
