I won't link to the daily fail/grail/pail/snail, but there has been some shock! horror! mum sent child to school with smartie sandwiches! This is the source of all evil! obligatory photo a bottom in tracki bottoms! Which capital letters for emphasis!

Anyway, I have been known to sprinkle hundreds and thousands on cream cheese. I put cocoa on pasta.

What are your thoughts? How far will you got to entice your children to eat? Do you think all children will eat, eventually, and only food with true nutritional value should be served to them?

Nutella sandwiches are practically a dietary staple for my children. My dh has even been known to make kit kat sandwiches.

How do they know it was the mother who made the sandwich?

SorrySorry Sun 29-Jan-12 17:03:39

My mum used to make us sugar sandwiches.

If it was orange smarties - surely they;d have some vit C????

belgo Sun 29-Jan-12 17:09:33

At least Smarties in the UK have fewer preservatives etc then the ones in the rest of Europe.

Good point about the vit C.

And aren't the blue ones made with a colouring from seaweed? Practically a health food.

cocoa on pasta? how what where? [confuddled]

ThePathanKhansWitch Sun 29-Jan-12 17:15:29

Cocoa on Pasta? Thats very Heston, i'm well impressed.

MrsMicawber Sun 29-Jan-12 17:20:35

More Hasidic than Heston, I'm afraid. DH used to get it as a child (Hungarian Satmar Hasidim) and it is one of the few elements of his upbringing that we feel is appropriate to pass on to our own children.

The pasta I use is actually quinoa pasta, with cocoa on that the DC's have had a triangular, if not square, meal.

I'm on a diet, I could so eat a smartie sandwich right now!

Honestly though, I reckon that sandwich was sent in to school by a parent as a protest. They were probably fed up with petty rules for packed lunches! (as we've seen on MN, banning chocolate and cakes etc when the same things are being served up as puds for school dinners).

Did she give him an energy drink chaser?

I am sure an older relative used to make sandwiches with condensed milk (think that's the stuff)

loving one of the comments on the article calling it abuse and the child should be taken into care.<pmsl>

good ole dailymail, always good for a laugh.

We used to have butter and sugar sandwiches confused

AngiBolen Sun 29-Jan-12 18:51:31

Smartie sandwiches, why have I never thought of that???

(Of course I would make them with organic wholemeal bread wink)

AngiBolen Sun 29-Jan-12 18:53:04

Actually, I think it would be better if it were held together with peanut butter.

I'm so going to introduce my DC to this next week end.

Pixel Sun 29-Jan-12 18:53:56

Or treacle!

AngiBolen Sun 29-Jan-12 18:54:28

Golden syrup. grin

TuftyFinch Sun 29-Jan-12 18:58:03

DS sometimes has Nutella sandwiches for his packed lunch, sometimes jam grin.
Other than that he'll only have cheese. He's in YR and really doesn't want school lunch but sometimes wants the pudding. It's his 5th birthday tomorrow and I'm going to make him apple crumble to take. His school doesn't have any weird packed lunch policy though and a fondant fancy is fine.

I used to have flake, lurpack and cheese. Migraine alert.

brandysoakedbitch Sun 29-Jan-12 19:18:24

Ooh a golden syrup sandwich...mmmmmmmmmmm

White bread and lots of butter..........mmmmmmmmmm

ThePathanKhansWitch Sun 29-Jan-12 19:34:27

I shall try that MrsM. Sounds lovely.grin.

pooka Sun 29-Jan-12 19:37:41

Yes yes to the humble golden syrup sandwich.

I used to do triple layer marmite sandwiches which were at least 50% butter. You could see the teeth marks in the butter when you'd taken a bite. Thick layer butter. Smidgen of marmite. Thick layer of butter. Smidgen of marmite. Thick layer or butter.

In white bread.

My heart is still working.

Well, sometimes ds gets sugar strand sandwiches on wholemeal (not at nursery!) He asked for a Buzz Light year sandwich, and I told him the strands were lasers. Depends on how many smarties really, and the context - ds eats loads of fruit and veg most of the time, no crisps, so the odd sprinkle sandwich is fine. If the smartie kid just eats crisps and crap then fair enough to be a bit concerned.

cookcleanerchaufferetc Sun 29-Jan-12 21:05:25

Personally I think the mother is a twat but clearly I am in the minority here. I mean, what the fuck does she feed her kid at home.
