Avian flu advice

  1. What should I do when buying live chickens?
When buying live chickens, try not to touch them or their droppings. Do not blow at their bottoms. If you have touched a chicken, wash your hands thoroughly with liquid soap and water.

This is a direct quote form the department of healths website providing guidance on avian flu.
    DOH - Avian flu

Errr why would anyone blow at a chicken's bottom?

To see whether it's healthy. Also, in a young chicken, to see whether it's male or female.

Alternatively, out of sheer kinkiness.

I'll let dh know for his next Turkish village visit.
(The only bottom he's allowed to blow at is mine and he'd better remember that...)

Doesn't everyone get the urge to blow on chicken's bums??

Not just the living fluffy kind either - I find pickin up a frozen one in tescos and blowing up its arse to be quite therapeutic.

Oh God, if I laugh much more today - my ribs will be aching.
What on earth is it with blowing chicken's bums? Is this some strange buying technique to see if it is a sound bird?
Flamebat, you sound very knowledgable - could you tell us more? Do you have to peel back the cling film or do you just give it a good blow regardless?

It works better if you peel back the clingfilm, but apparantly it is against "hygene regulations" and they give you stern talking tos and faces, so now its best to just blow with the clingfilm on.

If you get a warm fuzzy feeling, then put the chicken down and back away slowly!!!

You're only supposed to blow up a chicken's bum if it's alive and fully dressed (in it's feathers of course) - that way it's merely bestiality, if you peel back the clingfilm then it's necrophilia as well.
