Rotweillors

What I can't understand (re the recent case in Dundee of a small girl being mauled by 3 rotweillors) is why we can't have a law limiting the number of these dogs people are allowed to own. I'm a dog owner, but why does anyone need/want 3 dogs, let alone rotweillors.
It would be so easy to police, rather than going on a case-by-case basis, if you had to have a license for your dog, and, in the case of dangerous breeds, had to prove your case for owning more than one (or even just one IMO).

They're not a 'dangerous breed', I have a rottweiler and he isn't dangerous, he's a calm, well-trained, sweet-natured dog, and great with children (wouldn't leave him unattended with a small child or let him run loose in the street, but that's just common sense with any dog).

Any dog can be dangerous if mistreated and not properly trained and socialised from puppyhood, and obviously larger dogs are capable of doing more damage than the little ones (though in my experience small terrier breeds like Jack Russells are far more likely to have aggressive temperaments than Rotties etc).

Irresponsible dog owners are a danger, I completely agree, but let's not demonise an entire breed.

Any dog can attack at any time, FACT.

I get really fed up with stereotyping, just because one type has attacked doen't mean that all dogs of the same breed are aggressive.

It is very very sad but you are also reading the media, do you believe everything you read? We don't know the full story, just the bits that will sell the newspaper. (sorry sad but true).

Personally i am with ephiny i trust 'large breeds' far more than the smaller 'lap dog' types but again it all depends on individual dogs and more importantly their owners. In my many years of working with and keeping dogs i often find the vices of the dogs are given to them by their owners one way or another.

Of course its a fact that any dog can attack, but not all dogs can be stopped due to their size and strength.

Ant Rottweiler owner who says they'd be able to haul their dog off another person/dog is lying. So how can you justify keeping it?

Also I'm sick of hearing "its not the dog, its the owner"...what bloody difference does it make to the person getting attacked?

And please prove that every dog sttack results from a crap owner, truth is you dont know but its an easy way of dismissing other peoples concerns over your foul, thuggish "pets".

It might be true that all dogs can attack at any time - but the overwhelming number of attacks are caused by two or three breeds.

the reasons for this is that those types of dogs are owned by a certain type of person....

Any dog can run over and bite you at any time in the same way as any random stranger can come over and punch you in the face any time. There are some dangerous and unstable dogs out there, as there are people, but you can't stereotype all dogs or even certain breeds.

You could make it illegal for a dog to be out in public without a muzzle though.
Then they could still jump up, slobber and dribble on you, knock you over, bark in your face and have all their usual fun.

Nancy i don't think thats true - rather that people aren't likely to report a Jack Russell biting them.

Not all owners of large dogs are irresponsible - just that people who want a 'status' dog, possibly as a weapon, aren't going to go for a small dog. There are still plenty of responsible owners who have large dogs.

I've always loved rotties - but they simply can't be trusted round children. My Mums neighbour had a beautiful one, very friendly, great with kids - til it got into a field of sheep one day - killed 2.

Of course you can't stereotype all dogs of a breed, but the fact remains that a rottie attacking a child is very different from a king charles spaniel attacking a child.....

I'm sure I read somewhere that most dog bites on children seen in hospitals are actually by labradors (they are very mouthy, especially as puppies) but they aren't reported in the papers as it isn't sensationalism.

Yes, it's not the dog, it's the owner.
So what should be done to move towards preventing the thousands of bites that happen a year?
Can we start with those who do not own a dog first, and don't want to be bitten by one?Bbefore moving into dogs biting members of their own 'family' who have chosen to own a dog.

Pootles - JR are responsible for the overwhelming number of bites - vets report this - there is no official data on dog bites and breed. However the serious attacks are always caused by larger breeds.
