This vented tumble drier from White Knight works on a timer and has a maximum capacity of 6kg. It takes 112 minutes to dry a full load of cottons fully.

This is a mid-range vented tumble drier from value brand White Knight.

This drier is fast and energy efficient. However, it's also less easy to use than other, higher-scoring driers. The door is reversible.

We tested the previous version the White Knight 447, changes are cosmetic only. The 44AW is white, the 44AS is silver, otherwise the models are identical.

Pros: It leaves fewer creases than most models. Good energy efficiency like most vented driers

Cons: Dries less evenly than most models. Awkward to use

Scored 55%

Tinkjon Wed 16-Sep-09 20:17:31

Thanks ever so much, MaryBS!! 55% doesn't sound like much - do you know what the top score is?

MaryBS Thu 17-Sep-09 06:50:30

Siemens WT46W560GB at 73%, but that costs £899!

Out of the best buys, the Bosch WTV74308GB comes in at 70% for £390. Most of the rest are much more than that.

There IS a White Knight best buy, but it is gas.

MaryBS Thu 17-Sep-09 06:52:20

Or the Whirlpool AWZ3303 is only £170, and is still a best buy at 66% (there are a lot of best buys!)

Tinkjon Thu 17-Sep-09 12:29:07

Really appreciate this, Mary - you're a star! I did look into the gas one but too difficult to get it piped in, I think. I did fancy a White Knight as they get such good reviews here but I will have a think about it.

Thanks so much for your help!

MaryBS Thu 17-Sep-09 14:41:16

You're welcome, if I can help any more just shout!

Tinkjon Thu 17-Sep-09 15:15:12

Actually, one last question - how many stars
is a maximum score, is it 5? 3 out of 5 isn't so bad but 3 out of 10 is

And maybe I could have a review of that Bosch one? Only if you have time though. The WTV74308GB.

Ta again, petal!

MaryBS Thu 17-Sep-09 15:27:09

No probs! Its out of 5.

This Best Buy vented tumble dryer from Bosch dries all types of laundry quickly and evenly, and its 8kg capacity can deal with the biggest of loads.

It's a vented dryer which means the warm damp air extracted from the machine is pumped out through a hose. If you're looking to buy a vented dryer, make sure you have somewhere close to the dryer, a window or a door, where you can place the hose to let the air out. You can fit the hose to either the left side or the back of this Bosch.

The Bosch dries quickly - a full load of cottons takes 2 hours and 19 minutes or 17 and-a-half minutes per kg. A cotton half load is one hour and 16 minutes or about 19 minutes per kg and a half-load of synthetics is 57 minutes or just over 16 minutes per kg.

It's an automatic machine, which means that a sensor rather than a timer controls how long drying takes. The sensor works well as the loads tested were pretty evenly dried. You can manually add up to 40 minutes extra time if your clothes aren't quite dry enough.

After drying programs have finished, an anti-crease cycle automatically runs for 60 minutes gently tumbling the load every now and then to avoid creasing - this is automatic, and you can't switch it off. And a 20- minute airing program refreshes clothes by tumbling them without heat.

A 24-hour delay timer means you can dry your clothes at a convenient time and indicators show the status of the program, how much drying time is left and when it's finished. There's also an indicator to show when the lint filter needs to be cleaned.

The Bosch's 8kg capacity is above average, so it should be able to handle a full load from most washing machines.

It's C-rated for energy which means a full 8kg load will use about 4.73 kWh of electricity and cost about 59p or about 7p per kg.

Pros Quick and even drying, large capacity and ease of use

There IS another Bosch, slightly cheaper at 330, with a score of 68%:

The Bosch WTV74103 is a more sophisticated dryer than previous examples from its Classixx range, but keeps up the same tradition of good all-round performance.

It takes 120 minutes to dry a full 7kg load of cotton clothes - a little more than 17 minutes per kilogram - and is also quick to dry other types of fabric and load sizes.

This vented tumble drier uses a humidity sensor to automatically choose the drying time for you, whereas previous Classixx models left you to choose your own program time. This sensor worked well, choosing the correct times in our tests.

Your program choices are simply set out, with four levels of dryness for different types of cottons and three for synthetics, plus a warm 40-minute timed program and a cool 20-minute 'freshen up' option.

The machine is simple to use; status display lights tell you what stage your drying has reached and indicate if the lint filter needs cleaning. It's an entry-level machine and doesn't have a 'remaining program time' display or option to delay the start of your program.

It is easy to fill and empty, and the lint filter is easy to access, remove, replace and clean.

Like most vented driers the amount of energy it uses for drying is on the better side of average.

Pros: Dries quickly, dries evenly

Cons: Limited timed drying options, door can't be reversed

I took a chance and ordered the White Knight. Many thanks indeed, Superstar Mary!!

mack609 Sat 05-Nov-16 14:30:45

we have had the white knight 44aw dryer for around 6 years..3 of us in the house so it gets some use, drys well, only ever had one issue with it,...the heater stopped working due to blocked vent..just needed resetting using the reset button at the back.
for what it costs it is an excellent buy and I would recommend it to anyone...as for drying time we find a full load drys perfectly in 80 mins and ironing is minimal
