Fleas & no pets?!

I've been getting lots of bites on my ankles recently, the only time I got this before was when I still lived at home and our family cat had fleas! Have been complaining to DH about it, & we couldn't understand as I haven't been in contact with any animals recently.
Today DH took up the old carpet to lay laminate and saw a couple of little jumping things, showed one to me and i do believe it is a flea!
We moved here in November, we have no pets. I don't think the previous owners had pets but not 100% sure. Anyway, surely fleas need animal blood to live, how could we still have them now? Plus I only started getting bites about a month ago.. could this be the warmer weather?
What is the best course of action? I have a 2.4 yr old DS and DC2 due in 3 weeks! Don't want fleas at my Homebirth!!

We've had fleas before and, although we have a cat, she's an indoor cat who never goes out so I was puzzled as to how we'd got them. The pest control chap said it's perfectly possible to pick them up from a shop floor, a train, anywhere. Someone with fleas goes in, flea jumps off, you go in, flea jumps on. Best solution is professional fumigation. That gets the eggs as well as the fleas. It's perfectly safe for children and babies - we were fumigated when DS1 was 14 months old and the day before DS2 was born!

you can get a spray from the vets to do it,its about £6 and should do most of your house, you just spray it on then leave it overnight/a few hours then hoover it off,it protects your carpets for about 3 months after treatment too,
