My boiler's making loud clunking/banging sounds. Can anyone help? Will it break down before Monday? Should I turn it off and freeze?

It sounds rather nasty, the landady would rather get it repaired over and over again then get a new one. It's normally noisy but never this bad. It sounds like the pump.

Sounds like the pump to me, when our pump went int he last house we lived in, the clanking noise was REALLY loud, it woke me up in the middle of the night (and I sleep like the dead).

It was replaced 2 years ago. It's an old boiler but the landlady mizer won't replace it. I don't see the point spending money to repair it twice a year myself. It started clunking last night, it's been fine tonight up until now. Darn!

air in the system? bleed the radiators (when the system is cold) and see if that helps.

Noisy Boiler
Hissing or banging noises from your boiler or heating pipes are caused by the following:

Scale in the Heating System
The build up of scale can be treated with a chemical descaler, found at most DIY stores. This involves shutting down the system, adding the product and leaving it to work for a few days. The system then needs to be drained, flushed through and refilled.

This can cause 'hot spots' which produce loud bangs from steam bubbles. This can be treated by adding a chemical descaler to the Feed and Expansion Tank, found at most DIY stores. The system then needs to be drained, flushed through and refilled. See Bleeding Radiators for help with this.

Boiler Thermostat is Set Too High or is Faulty
See Faulty Boiler Controls.

Lack of Water or Pressure in the Central Heating System
You will need to double check that the mains water is on. If it is, first turn off your boiler and check your Feed and Expansion Tank - move its metal arm to release the Float valve if it's stuck. Check that the Open Safety-Vent Pipe is correctly installed. Another cause could be that you have Burst of Frozen Pipes.

If the problem is a lack of water pressure, the pressure indicator on your central heating boiler will usually indicate it needs to be increased.

It could be scale, it does sound like there's something in it (gritty) when it's not clunking and banging. Arse! I'm going to have no central heating or hot water for a few days whilst I sort it out!

No burst/frozen pipes. It's not been very cod here. I don't have a pressure indicator on the boiler (it needs to be in a museum

scrooged - when this happened to us, we needed the pump replacing. The noise was absolutely horrendous and frightened the life out of me.

If your landlord rents you the house through an agent, there may be an emergency plumbers number on their answer machie if they have one. Ours does & we kept ringing it every time the heating didn't work at our old house until they actually realised it was knackered & moved us out.

Just tell them you're without heat/hot water as you're scared it's something serious & they ought to come out like they did for us

It's still banging away science teacher. It does it when I heat the water too so I've turned it off.

We have a convector heater than my neighbour gave us a couple of weeks ago so am using that in the living room. I don't think the radiators are getting warm now. We rent through an agency but they don't have emergency contact details . I don't have any time off work until Wednesday to wait in for the repair man though.

could a neighbour maybe wait in for you if they can get someone out tomorrow? You can't be waiting til Weds for it to be repaired! Having no heat/water is not fun!

I've just phoned them to leave a message but there was someone there . They can't send someone out until tomorrow so at least I won't have to wash up today . The shower is electric so we can have a wash with hot water at least.

He's in hospital tomorrow so he's just come and fitted a new pump. We now have hot water and heat!

I have recently moved into a rented property and when i turn on the hot water or flush the chain the boiler makes such a loud noise, ive been told this is normal surely its not?

Hi,

Would anyone advise? I have same terrifying noise, but it only starts when I run hot water, when the heating is on, there is no noise, so I assume it's not to do with the heating system? I did turn the hot water heating indicator down, but it did not help. The boiler is new, heating system not. It happened once before, I called the manufacturer and was advised to reset the boiler and it helped. It doesn't help this time though.

P.S. And on my screen there is fault code: either Flame Loss (which is not, as the heating is fine and the hob works fine too) or Ignition Lockout?!??!

Mine does this when the pressure gets too low. Have a look at the gauge and refill if necessary!
