Can I really really put my Converse trainers in the washing machine?

People keep telling me I can but I won't believe it till MN has told me! We went down in some caves yesterday and they are covered in this horrible looking chalky mud stuff and they're black so it really shows!

So if I put them in the wash will they fall apart or will they be ok?

I put my trainers in the wash. One pair have been through about 20 times (they really stink!!) and are still in one piece!

Are they comfy to wear SD? My ds wants some for Christmas but I can't help feeling that they look a bit basic.

They are the most comfortable shoes in the world! This is my third or fourth pair!
