Has anybody hired a carpet/upholstery cleaner - are they any good?

Need to clean our stair carpet and a couple of bedrooms which are grubby but not too bad. Our sofas our filthy because of the cats jumping on them with muddy paws but I'm concerned that an upholstery attachment on a carpet cleaner won't work as well as getting some one in to do it and/or it will leave the sofas very wet.

Anyone got any suggestions/recommendations?
