How do I clean a cot mattress?

DD emptied two bottles of milk onto her mattress last night. DH gave it a bit of a clean, put a towel on top and put her to bed.

It's the kind of mattress with a plastic backing so I can see where the milk has gone right through and pooled on the bottom. How on earth can I clean it properly so it won't smell!?

I can't picture the mattress from teh description! Does the plastic backing come off? Is it foam or sprung?

If foam, I'd suggest you wash it in the bath and squeeze it out as much as you can then put it in the garden to dry

No I think it's sprung and the backing is attached. It's one of these.

Oh god I've just seen it says they recommend using the wipe clean side how would that work with the whole airflow thing then?

oh dear! I don't know what to suggest really. Any chance of some bicarb floating down to the bottom? I doubt it ... maybe ring Mothercare and ask for their advice?

ok - this happened to me except DS barfed all over his mattress

get it over the bath, wet it and rub LOADS of bicarbonate of soda into in (so it goes paste like)

rinse a lot

this will take the smell away

you then need BIOLOGICAL washing powder - sprinkle onto the affected side and rub in

rinse clean

you should then be left with a stink free mattress (although it takes a while to dry)

Thanks will give that a try. At least the weather's nice so I can stick it outside to dry!
