food recycling collections.... tips to avoid pong?

hello

our local council collects food waste for compost, which is a great idea, but it makes for a pongy pair of bins (small one for use in the kitchen and then transferred to the big one outside the front door)

I find the small one especially really nasty to have in the kitchen, even with biodegradable bags etc with them. I would really prefer to do without the bags, as it seems to defeat the object a bit (esp now as biodegradable ones are apparently not ecologically sound)

Can anyone recommend a good way of keeping on top of the messiness - or particularly, an easy to clean, good fitting-lidded bin or caddy?

thanks

I have the Lakeland green plastic one with charcoal filters (to absorb the odour) which works quite well for me. However this is for home composting and so does not include any cooked food or meat. Just fruit/veg peelings etc .

Be watching this with interest as we're getting food waste bins soon.
BTW a good way to deter maggots and flies, tape a cedar ball to the top of the bin, works like a dream, we've never had maggots.
