how much does a decent painter decorator cost?

Well, not up to date but Ds1's Dad used to charge £100 a day. This was about 5 years ago in Kent.
Depends how big your house is though, he worked on a mansion once and it took him months, a normal property might take a few weeks.

I paid £500 per room, all prep, filling etc,woodwork priming and 2 coats.

I just got told by a decorator (but not In London/SE) 120 quid a day and length of time taken will depend on how much prep needed, average room takes 1-2 days apparently, but longer if lots of difficult stripping/filling/woodwork... Hall/stairs etc takes longer too...

I am crap at painting, I have zilch patience and am so slap dash.

Bear in mind Ds's dad spent most days pissing it up the wall (not literally) as he used to buy loads of beer and then ring me up to go and 'help'.

Let's just say he wasn't painting.

And I didn't drink any of the beer...

Get someone recommended if you can.

we had some great guys come in and do ours. it cost about 4k, which included all the paint as well (all our rooms are different colours and so too are some of the walls within the same rooms). the finish is excellent.

we are in a 3 bed edwardian house with a big kitchen extension at the back.

it took about 3 weeks for them to do.

I do most of the painting myself and get the p&d in for the wall papering/coving etc.

You can prepare lots yourself, filler and snadpaper.

What about a trainee from a local college? may be an idea. Lots of colleges do courses and bound to be some pretty semi skilled mature ones out there? You could phone and ask. Prob only avail at weekends but just a thought.

I do all my decorating myself out of neccesity and am about to bring house up to scratch but my stairs are particularly difficult as I have winders making the walls very high and ladders difficult to place. Added to this I'm not good with hieghts and money is limited. are there decorators who would just tackle the walls if I did my own paintwork and would this cut cost very much. Kelly you don't say what area you live in?

lihaze, I'm glad I've seen your post because we recently had our 3 bed flat (high ceilings, detailed cornicing) painted and dh is having kittens over the £3k plus £500 materials paid. Living room and front bedroom are huge plus 2 double bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, and hallway. French doors on to garden, large built in wardrobe also painted, plus all skirting board, doors, windows etc.

I thought it was a fair price and haven't seen it but am told the finish is good. Dh still not sure.

Any friends do their own decorating? Friend's son who grew up helping did my hall,stairs & landing to an excellent finish and for very small amount, a few years ago. I thought of him recently when the outside painting I'd had done by well-known local professional started to peel within first year - I was offered repainting but have arranged someone else instead. Do find someone well recommended.

how much should I pay a painter for the following - one bedroom, ceiling and all wood work and wall painted. put up new coveing and varnish window frame. they will supply the paint for all. I will supply the coveing.
should be approx. 2.5 fays

£100 a day where I am, based on work we had done recently: 2 double bedrooms, a box room, and small utility room painted from top to bottom for £400.
