False blinds - Would this work, or have I gone a bit mad ??

Basically, when I was putting lights up in my front window for xmas, I broke the blind that goes there and it can't be fixed.

Now, the only type of blind I can afford to buy for there is a roller blind, but I hate them because they are sooooooooo fiddly to fit.

Previously I had those cheap wicker blinds, and they were ok but not mad keen on them either.

Anyway, I was thinking, I never used to unroll the blind completely, it was always half way up/down the window, and so I hit upon this mad idea.

Basically to get some fabric or even curtains that I like and are cheap and make a false blind, by cutting the fabric to the width of my window and then to the required length (about half to 3/4 of the way down. I would attatch it at the top with velcro so it could be easily removed for washing and window cleaning (yeah right) and also weight the bottom edge down so that it sat right.

So, what do you think ?? Mad idea ?

I know you can make proper roman blinds with proper kits and that but I was not madly keen on the one roman blind i had as it never sat right, and the kits are more than i want to pay for the whole thing.

would work fine. I had a velux window in a flat and couldnt afford proper blind so used curtain wire and scrap of material and just fixed it up.

Oh good, i'm all excited now, I could go mad and do all of the windows

Fab thing is, I brought Dd1 a mini sewing machine from Superdrug for xmas, for £7 and it is fantastic, works just like a normal one so I can use that.

I've got roll-up blinds in one of my rooms, because I couldn't fit roller blind mechanisms in. It's basically a piece of fabric stapled to the top of the frame, fit to cut the whole window. Then a piece of dowelling in the bottom of the fabric. Two stips of material are attached to the front and back of the blind on each side, and when you want to put them up, you just manually roll the blind round the dowelling and tie the strips together to secure.

I did that in my old flat. It looks really nice from the outside too. I cut mine in a pointy zig zag shape, and fabric glued it cos I can't sew for toffee!!
