QUICK POLL - closes at 7.30 tonight.......should I change the sheets on our bed today.....

or leave it until tomorrow.

Some of you may remember my "DH insisted I put the dirty sheet back on the bed" thread a few weeks ago.....well he's got over that now (told him I'd change the sheets when I bl**dy well like - and I'd change ALL of them next time LOL). It's a bit of a mammoth task to change them - 2 duvets, 1 fitted bottom sheet, 2 flat sheets, 5 pillowcases etc et.

Been 2 weeks since I changed them.......I know it's rather slatternly not to have even changed them since then....but that's me - but I'm trying to change and be more "domesticated"...and do things like that on a regular (set) basis.

So - do I change them tonight - or should I leave it until tomorrow??

lulu - if you want come and change all the sheets on our (admittedly bizarre) bed weekly - you're more than welcome to .

Given that I have to walk round the bed umpteen times (because I'm a short arse and can't reach across etc) and the number of duvets etc it takes me a good 15/20 minutes to do it......and I definitely can't be ar*ed to do it weekly LOL

depends on whether you hope to have sex tonight and would prefer to have lovely clean sheets to get you more in the mood, or potentially not want to get your clean sheets a bit messy and then have to rewash tomorrow.

i started this a few weeks ago if you want to make yourself feel better for leaving it longer than 2 weeks.

aha - right I think I'm with you on this one NA - 3 weeks sounds reasonable (and pretty good for me ).

bluestocking - does that fact that I only sleep in the bed (and therefore use my duvet/sheet/pillowcase - we have seperate duvets on the same bed ) approx 4/5hrs a night, and DH uses his around 7/8 mean I can leave it a little longer than those that use them 8-10hrs????

WHY so many sheets and stuff?

Report
FarcicalAlienQueen · 15/01/2008 20:28

the flat sheets - because that's something that DH always did before I met him - he likes a flat sheet under the duvet (so on top of you). Wasn't any great hardship for me to add a flat sheet into the bed making equation and it kept him happy - and then I got used to it anyhow - so became the "norm" for me

We now have a duvet each though as we're both (well apparently I'm worse ) terrible about "stealing" the duvet from each other - so DH figured it would solve the conflicts that arose because of that issue if we had our own duvet.....we don't have enough single duvets - put plenty of double ones - so we just use those (with the "loose" bit tucked firmly under our respective sides). Naturally the flat sheet also got fought over - so we have a flat sheet each too - again not enough (actually no) single flat sheets in the house to give us one each so works the same as the duvets.

What we really need is

a) a bigger bed ideally a king (we just have a standard double which really isn't big enough for our tossing and turning LOL.

and or

b} a bigger duvet which even with "fighting" in our sleep means that we'll both still be happy.

If an average couple sleeps in their double bed for 2x8=16 hours per night, and all linen is changed once per week, that = 112 hours per linen change. If the FAQ household sleep in their linen for 4.5 + 7.5 = 12 hours per night, they need to change their linen every 9.5 days (or thereabouts) to maintain acceptable levels of non-ughness. I could do separate calculations for your duvet and your DH's duvet but I would rather not - I have just done my tax return and there are numbers dancing before my eyes!

would you like to fund this king size duvet (and covers to fit it???)

And no I won't bin the flat sheet.......I "forced" many of my quirks and habits onto DH - the least I can do is indulge him in one of his......and anyhow it's useful in the summer when it's too warm for a duvet - but you still need something over you for that "cold" part of the night......the sheet

we use a flat sheet but only when it is too hot for a duvet ... no need otherwise!!

oh it won't be half our life - as soon as the money from my Grandad's estate comes through either both the bed and the duvet covers - or just the latter depending on how much it actually comes to - is top of the list of "to buy"

Right, just buy one king size flat sheet. Then change the fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillow cases reguarly and the two duvet covers less regularly as owing to the flat sheet they are not in that much contact with your bodies. Duvets presumably are the most hassle to change.

Have to say this is the most bizarre system of bedding I have ever come across. We use the king size duvet on double bed method.

Report
barbamama · 15/01/2008 22:31

yes I was going to say that - do both duvet covers need changed every week if there are flat sheets under them (sorry that is mental - but I have bed fetishes myself).

The most mental though is the whole tucking at the edges meeting in the middle bit - go to Morrisons and buy one of the super cheap king size quilts they have there at the moment and then to TK MAxx for a cheap king duvet cover. On a double bed = job done.

barbamama - I'm not sure my £18 which has to last me until next Thursday (or £43 if my friend can loan me £25 until then) will stretch to any duvet - no matter how cheap

And the king size flat sheet wouldn't work - as we used to "fight" over a flat sheet in our sleep too......DH wraps himself up like an eskimo with the Duvet - as do I occasionaly (which is fine with a larger duvet as there's enough lee-way to wrap some around yourself and not nick off the other person) - and a single flat sheet would stop us being able to do that.

And besides - our local Morrisons doesn't have any king size duvets - and I haven't got a clue where our closest TK Max is

Surely if you use a flat sheet under the duvet then the flat sheet is what you sleep against.

The duvet then becomes and honorary blanket so the duvet very rarely need to be changed unless a spillage occurs as they do not have flaky bodies against them.

The traditional way to change a bed for the less cleanliness obsessed housewife is thus:

Weekly

Remove bottom sheet for washing.
Replace bottom sheet with top sheet.
Add clean top sheet.
Remove top two pillowcases and replace with clean ones.

You are therefore washing one sheet and two pillow cases per week. This is what I did for about 6 months after each baby to make life easier. I also used a top sheet under duvet then so didn't have to change duvet cover and risk rupturing c- section scar.

there you go

I know - that makes sense Flum - but I'm a bit odd (in case you hadn't already realised ) and if I change the sheets I have to change ALL of them........besides I have matching pillowcases for my duvet covers and I like matching sets (drives me nuts when DH decides to change his pillowcases half way through a "cycle" and he puts on ones that don't go with his duvet cover - it puts me all out
