Removing 'old wood' smell from furniture

I have a chest of drawers which belonged to my great aunt. It is a really useful size - but the insides of the drawers are really smelly. Can anyone suggest a way of getting rid of the smell?

How weird - I was just going to post the same question about a chest of drawers we've just bought from a charity shop.

DS2 not keen on lavendar scented drawer liners, apparently.

A dish of vinegar left overnight in each drawer might help. It certainly gets rid of other lingering smells (particularly vomit).

But if whatever causes the smell is soaked into the wood, then it might prove tougher to shift. What about rubbing bicarbonate of soda into the wood, leaving 24h, then vacuuming? You could then repeat with a mixture of bicarb and cinnammon. I do this for carpets.

Also, don't discount fresh air

If there's a smell you prefer (OP more than Humphrey), you could try masking the smell ... aromatherapy stuff might not do any good therapeutically but it might make your drawers more fragrant. ()
