rug under a table?

have just redecorated our living/dining room - they are open plan (used to be a wall between them but knocked down years ago before we bought the house)

We're just about to buy a new rug for the living room and dh thinks we should get one for under the table as well to keep things looking the same.

BUT with 3 young children (5, 2 and almost 1) I dread the inevitable cleaning with food dropped and drinks spilled that would end up on this rug

Any tips if we do go ahead? It is an absolute no-no?!?!

As someone who has inherited carpet and carpet tiles in a dining area previously, I would NOT recommend a rug. Solid floors that can take a good scrubbing are the way to go!

I've got one under my dining table - but thats cos I've got new dark wwod flooring and I don't want it to get all scratched from the chairs pushing back and forward.

It does look a bit shabby though.
