Please Help - Having terrible time getting curtain rail up

DH has been trying to put a rail (finally) up in the bedroom and it's a nightmare. He is at work now so I am going to try and do it. One bracket I think is up and secure (ish). Where the middle bracket goes we cannot seem to drill very far into the wall, and we haven't attempted the end bracket. I want to finish putting the last 2 brackets up but I really have no clue. I have a drill, a new drill bit (think DH said the last one was useless), screws, rawl plugs (although they are called thermal block fixings (??)) and they have a drill bit included, I have an electric screwdriver and I think that's it. Can someone give me an idiots guide to doing this please? I know I have to mark, then drill, then get the plug things in then screw in the bracket but I am sure I will muck it up.
Thanks

tried it anyway and the drill wasn't going far in, the rawl plug made the whole just bigger and crumble so have called it a day anyway.
