Just noticed the old thread was full, so hope no one minds me starting the new one

In reply to stumbly on the last thread: I agree with bubs, if the too small clothes inspire you then keep them, if they make you feel sad or guilty then chuck them.

I asked my three year old to go through her toy box today and pick out some things she doesn't love, to give away to 'other children'. We started with cuddly toys because she has hundreds of the little bastards. She has surprised me by picking out lots (more than half) of them to give away. I'm not sure whether to go with it, or if she maybe doesn't understand what I meant, that they would be really gone for good. She did pick out to keep the ones I know are her special favourites so perhaps she doe understand?. Would you give the other toys all away? O should I put them in the loft and see of she asks for any of them, and if not take them to the charity shop in a few months?

Meanwhile I really need to kondo my christmassy user name Blush

Snozberry...Thanks for the thoughts on the clothes. I'm going to leave them (they are in one drawer) as a special category to deal with towards the end like sentimental items while I mull it over...have plenty to Kondo in the meantime!

I'd be tempted to put them in the loft for a set period of time, maybe 4 weeks and then if she hasn't asked for any back take them to the charity shop.

This is Snozzberry, name finally changed after a million attempts to find something not in use

That sounds like the best plan stumbly!

KondoAttitude With my too small clothes I went through them, took out anything that didn't spark joy. The things that did I have put in my wardrobe. If they still don't fit in 6 months to a year (depending on sizes) then I am going to get rid of them.

I couldn't sleep last night so I got some of the files out and started sorting papers. This morning I filled a sack with shredded paper. I only did 1/10 of the files!

Can I join? I have only actually Kondoed a few clothing categories, so I am not really an expert at all. I love it though! I helped my friend do a few categories- helping someone else Kondo is a very pleasing way to pass the time for sure...
Oooh, KobdoAttitude can I have a go at your draw of doom?? So:
Examples: outdoor candles that won't be used for another 11 months,
Do you actually like them? If so, can you store with other summer outdoor kit? Possibly in a shed??
foreign coins we always forget to take when we go abroad,
Store with your passports, in a Euro purse if you have a second purse you love, or a money bag from the bank if not.
leftover passport photos,
If you look gorgeous in them, store with birth certificate etc, as you will use together, or with other photos. If you look as shit as I do in mine, bin and take another set when you need some next.
wooden toys given to me by DF and DSS that I don't want to discard but have nowhere to put.
Either admit you don't love them and give them to a really good cause, display, or keep with other sentimentalia.

So easy, to breeze through other people's hellish categories. Doing my own, now. Not such a breeze.

Hello! I have been Kondoing for a few weeks now. I've done my clothes and books, but slowed down big time on papers because (a) they are very tedious to sort through and (b) it is a massive pain to shred the confidential stuff and I am generating them at a much faster rate than I can be bothered to shred them. Has anybody found an easy way to securely destroy papers fast?!?

I have also been jumping ahead and doing komono stuff as I spot it. I've been through the bathroom cabinet (very satisfying!), cutlery drawer, and some of the kitchen cupboards.

I am finding it helpful, and that DH is being inspired to do some tidying too. The house is already looking visibly tidier as I experiment with putting stuff in new places/organising cupboards. I am rather pleased with my arrangement of various types of bin bags in a old takeaway container.

This may be heretical, but I am not persuaded by the folding. I have done it for tights and leggings, but didn't find it a good option for anything else.

I love the folding for underwear, socks, tights, gym gear and nightwear but to be honest the rest of my clothes need to be hung as they are mainly dresses, things that crease, etc.

I started kondo'ing my tops and skirts yesterday. I already have about a bag full for eBay/charity. A little bit left to do today.

I've been through my clothes twice over the last six months (not with Kondo) so I'm surprised at how much more I'm willing to let go of now!

IsItMe, re papers, can you burn them?

Report
CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 06/02/2016 09:51

Isitme I take my confidential waste to Work and put it in the confidential waste bin there!

I really like the folding, although I am quite lazy about it and lots of things are kind of rolled.

Welcome kondo and grubby. I to am waiting for a solution to messy cables everywhere. They are needed daily so never get put away in a cupboard and some things like laptops are left out and plugged in.

Hello, I'd like to join you too. I had a spurt of Kondo'ing last year when I did clothes and books, but I have so much more to do. A better system for paperwork has eluded me so far, happy to hear any tips!

Kondo priestesses and priests, can I have your counsel.

I am a hoarder for sure, not like the ones on the telly but there are bags of stuff in my bedroom and boxes of stuff and generally Far Too Much Stuff for us to live harmoniously in our space.

But there is a load of stuff I am keeping for the car boot sale that I honestly don't think I can ever get together.... or the stuff I might sell on ebay.

Does a Kondorite accept that hanging on for the very unlikely CB sale is the act of a clutter junkie who can never be saved? I want someone to say "you'll never do it! get rid of it!"

My car boot pile took up about a quarter of my garage

My eBay pile was 6 ikea bags crammed full at the bottom of my bed

I ditched them and it was wonderful

My Konmari question is about clothes: I've just had a baby (dd2) a month ago, so while I'm not in my maternity gear anymore, I'm not in my workwear (a regular size I hope I'll get back to at some point) either because I'm on maternity leave and eating biscuits (which also bring me joy, but that's another issue).

So is it possible to Konmari your wardrobe when you're in a temporary state? What brings me joy now might not be forever, and I worry about keeping hold of clothes that I don't fit in/don't need at the moment in the hope that at some point they'll be relevant again. This, of course, also gives me an excuse not to do my clothes until later in the year, which isn't the point....

What would you do?

Djini- I put all of my joyful clothes in a plastic box at is ye top of my wardrobe, and now I'm finally losing baby weight my daughter is 2 im getting SO much joy out of wearing them again! so i would say if they're joyful, keep them.

I know what Marie would say, though! Grin

longstockings take it to the charity shop!!! You are not going to carboot it!!! (As instructed, tee hee)
KondoAttitide glad to help, vicarious kondoing, he he!
Djin I have been pregnant or breastfeeding for nearly 4 years now, sigh. I have a bag of clothes unsuitable for current bodily state, but I am super strict about only keeping the stuff I truly love and can't wait to wear again. New stuff turns up, it's gloomy to open up a big bag of stuff you don't even really like, and has been sat there for months or years getting musty and dated. If you are stuck without enough clothes when you change shape you can always tide yourself over from the charity shop (as donated by longstockings, natch). I think it is time for me to face up to some much loved, very svelte and gamine sundresses which I doubt will befit my age when I am next the right shape, if ever I am...

Djini I think grubby has it. I have a two month old so I'm in a similar boat. Just keep the stuff you can't wait to be at again and will inspire you to lose the weight.

The other problem I have is I don't really love anything which fits me now, but I don't have money to spend on a joyful new wardrobe of clothes that will hopefully be too big for me soon.

I think mk's weakest area is anything to do with family - partner's and kids's stuff, clothes being kept for future pregnancies, babies or post baby weight loss. It's why we need a mumsnet thread to fill in the gaps.
