Smelly washingmachine

Can someone please help me sort my washing machine smell out? I found a rogue toddler sock still dripping wet in the rubber creasing at the front of the washing machine, I hadn't realised it was stuck and it's been there for a few days and the machines stinks now of mould/damp, it's horrid and I just can't shift it! I have done several hot washes, anti bac wipes and left the door open, what am I missing?

White vinegar.

Use one of the little rubber washing liquid cup thingies.
Half fill with white vinegar, stick in empty washer and put it on a hot wash.
It helps. We do it every 3 washes.
Sometimes we put a half dose of softener in as well just to get he fragrance.

Thank you I had wondered whether white vinegar would help! I will pick some up tomorrow and give it a go. Never had this before and was surprised a hot wash didn't get rid of it!
I don't have anything to put it in the machine in though, will it work if I pour in the draw and also the rubber crease by the door?

Maybe, I don't see why not?
Just be mindful its quite strong stuff and an acid, in wouldn't put it onto rubber without diluting it first.

May help.

I have gotten rid of washing machine smells by running an empty cycle with a liberal squirt of bleach in the tray, though if PP are getting told that vinegar will cause damage then someone might come along and tell me that that is a stupid thing to do! Worked though, and didn't cause any problems for me.

Thank you both! I had considered bleach earlier but wasn't sure. I am going to pick up some vinegar shortly and give that a go and then may have to resort to some bleach! I can't stand the smell!!

Dh runs the machine on hot with nothing in and adds bleach once a month. It got rid of all kinds of gunk, he could see it in the window floating about the first few times now theres very little or nothing to see. No smells any more either. Just make sure the first load you do after the bleaching is some plain whites, we do a load of white towels, in case of bleach residue.
