If stains don't come off with dry cleaning is it permanent?

Deathly boring, sorry. My wedding dress (not traditional) has a red wine stain on the cream area of the dress - the fabric is a cotton/linen mix I think. The stain is now grey after I took it to the dry cleaners. They said there was nothing they could do. Does anyone have any advice? It is quite prominent but I would love to be able to wear the dress (it was 80 pounds - far too much for one wear only!!) - it is not machine washable.
