What's the best cat litter?

I'm using Tesco's own clumping litter at the moment. I have used CatSan in the past but the smell when you clean it out is to be believed.

I do a full change on the litter every 6 days or so, and a scoop out two or three times a day.

But if there's anything better, I'd love to know.

It depends where the litter tray is and how often you clean it out as much as the litter. When we didn't have much space we used a covered tray with a flap, and now it's in an old kitchen cabinet in the utility room. The tray gets disinfected every 6-7 days. I use wood pellets for one cat and catsan for another very fussy cat. It only smells when towards the end of the week or if not scooped after every poo.

I have tried several brands but have found the best in terms of odour control to be Morrisons own brand wood pellets. About £3 for a huge bag .

I would recommend Cat's Best by Oko Plus. From Pets at Home or cheaper in bulk online. Outstanding smell locking in capability, the ammonia smell of wee just doesn't get out.

I second Cat's Best. It really is fab, and it's flushable too, if you keep the tray in the loo like us.

I have six cats and swear by professional classic cat litter, it seems expensive initially, but it lasts ages and having tried most types of litter I've found this one to be the best. The trays are scooped every day and rarely need a full clean out, which was unheard of with other litters I've used.

I use sainsburys odour control & its a lot better than catsan, the smell from that was awful.

Thanks everyone. I have been using catsan and scooping each time then cleaning whole thing every 2 days. It's getting silly as cleaning whole thing every 2 days is costing a fortune.

I've put some wood pellet stuff in this afternoon from oets at home and see how she goes on with that then il try some of the suggestions above. I keep the tray in the kitchen and only one cat uses it then other, bigger cat goes outside thank god

I'd also really recommend Cats Best, best one I've ever tried and it's got loads of 5 star reviews on Amazon.

The best thing about it is it's ability to lock in smells, it's transformed my house! The wee forms 'balls' that can easily be scooped then either popped in a bag & thrown or flushed down the toilet. Scoop daily and top up with a bit of fresh litter.

I only change the whole tray once every 2-3 weeks or so, maybe longer. It's amazing! And I've had cats for nearly 20 years, I've never found a litter as good as this.

Thanks rolacola I need my life transforming! Inky one cat uses it at the moment but the three kittens will be ready to use it soon so its gonna get stinkier as I say thank god by big Maine coone goes outside lol

I'd also recommend Formula H disinfectant - it's safe for use on animal kit (vets use it) and you only need to slosh a tiny amount around even the stinkiest litter tray when you're doing a full change to make sure there's no long-term build up of odour.

Tesco anti bacterial seems to be the best for my cat, it's like Catsan but no smells & cheaper too. Keep the tray in a discrete corner of the kitchen, cat let's me know when to scoop & clean out the whole usually once a week.

Well the wood pellets from pets at home have been in a couple if days and ...omg.... No smell so far!! I've usually changed the tray 2-3 times by now! Thanks for the advice I now love my at again lol

Wood pellets are good but even better are recycled paper pellets. There's a brand called 'yesterday's news' you can buy over the internet and get delivered or Pets at Home sell a similar one called 'Breeder's Celect' (terrible name) that's £15 for a huge bag. It's great stuff as it doesn't smell, doesn't track through the house and it's not dusty on Dear Cat's coat.

I used cats an but always a full empty and new litter everyday no smells. No way would I leave cat litter for more than 2 days before a complete change x
