storing fruit and veg

this may be (is) a daft question but where is the best place to store fruit and veg? due to lack of space in current kitchen everything goes in the fridge, but will be building an extension and can now think about planning my kitchen properly.

my MIL keeps everything in her garage during colder months and buys sparingly in warmer weather but I can't go shopping that often!

Could your extension include a larder? I had one in my old house, it was great to have a small room just for food ;)

I currently keep onions and potatoes in a kitchen cupboard that is quite cold as the wall is not insulated very well, I think because the garage is on the other side. Other veg go in fridge and fruit that is going to be eaten soon in fruit bowl in kitchen window.

General advice for storing veg is dark, dry and cold.

Having just insulated our house I've lost my cold store aka the whole kitchen I've increased the size of my fridge to cope. It's a fancy pants neff one which if the sales pitch is to be believed has special compartments that keep the fruit and veg extra long. My mum uses one of those banana bags that prevents then going black in the fridge.

Friend taught me to use the waxed-paper from inside cereal boxes to store fruit and veg in fridge, and I do think it helps. (Bananas on hook in kitchen).

Fruit and veg stores better when it's dark and cold. Those special bags work well apparently although I use hessian sacks and store in the outside shed during the colder months.

What about an old fashioned cold store with slate/granite shelves and a door as part of the new kitchen OR ( on my personal wish list for when I win the lottery) a corner fridge ?
