How do you keep a shoe closet smelling fresh?

I've taken all the shoes out, Febreezed them, hoovered and mopped the floor. It still whiffs a bit.
What can I do in addition to the above?

Air it out!!! Is there anywhere you can out shoes where they can 'breath' and let the air get to them?

If this is not possible, I'd buy a few air freshners and stick them in the corners of the cupboard :)

Yes, they're often aired out as the closet is in the porch by the front door, so we leave that open a lot. I've put Neutradol gel air fresheners in there before but that doesn't seem to work either. Confused

Run smelly kid's trainers through the washing machine or a bucket of soapy water? Scrub any surfaces with some good soap as well.

Air fresheners just add smells, they don't get rid of them.

I put those tumble drier sheets in mine and it always smells lovely when I open it.
I don't air it as it looks messy with the door open but I do wash trainers in the washing machine regulary as they are the main smell culprits

Get one of the ones with holes in? IKEA do one. Ours has never smelt despite some of the shoes doing so!
