Tomorrow I am going to Clean The Oven.
What are your preferred methods/products/magic tips to make me look like Queen of Cleaning?
It isn't disgustingly filthy, just generally grimy.

Call the nice people at Ovenu. Since discovering them on a Mumsnet thread a while ago, I will never again attempt to achieve what they can! My oven literally looked like it was brand new Smile

I know that probably isn't what you were after, but I've always failed dismally at getting an over properly clean!

Nooo, I need to do it myself so as to look all un-slatternly!

I agree, get the professionals in. Smile We didn't use an Ovenu but another company who were quite a bit cheaper but did a very good job.

I too would get the professionals in. It is so worth the money!

Yes - get a professional in. Absolutely worth the money...

Definitely a job for the pros!

We too got a man in, a very reasonable man from Gordon Ramsay's Cleaner Cookers as it happens. Wonderful man. He charged us all of £38 (Ovenu had quoted £75) and he made my oven all shiny and beautiful. Sadly, very sadly the oven has started setting the smoke alarm off again but it has been around 6 months since he cleaned it! I may get some oven pride this time for a quick job but I'm definitely getting him in once a year!

I am going to recommend Lidl oven cleaner.. Take out the shelves and place on old newspaper outside and spray. Then spray the glass and inside. Wait for 40 mins or so and wipe off/scourer stains.

Brillo pad any areas that didn't sparkle after that.

Oh really, is the Lidl one good? What is it like compared to Oven Pride/Oven Mate do you know?

Then put aluminium foil at the bottom of the oven so you can just replace that in future. Also use magic bags for cooking it to stop anymore explosions. I am sad but love cleaning the oven Grin

Yes I like the Lidl one but the Mr. Muscle one is good too. I would say the Oven Pride is the same. Just use a lot of it if it is a while since it was done. The brillo is great though for the last little bits with hot water.

I got a professional but he didn't get it to brand new standards. I think I'd have a go at it again with Mr Muscle on the oven and that oven stuff you put in a bag with the trays.

Thanks for the recommendations for actual products/methods!
Can't really put foil in the bottom of the oven as it's a fan oven so it wouldn't stay put.

When microwave-cleaning, I did the 'bung a bowl of water in and turn it on for a bit' thing to loosen up the crud - does that help with ovens too?

Oh yes actually cakes it does, I'd forgotten that. A dish of water and vinegar in the oven til it is all steamed up then when cool enough to wipe but not cold wipe it all out. It works really well.

  1. Get it professionally cleaned
  2. Never use it again Grin

Some oven cleaning professionals use products and scrub, just like you would. Some have these heated dip tanks in a van. They will definitely make it brand new, but it's not cheap as the equipment is expensive. £50 for a regular single oven (plus grill and hob) is pretty standard, as far as I know.

I'm not sure about cleaning the extractor hood, but I'm sure they do that, as well.

If you pay to have it done once, and put a silicone liner in the bottom, you can wipe it out weekly and keep it pretty near perfect for a long time. I don't clean ovens, but I have some clients with clean ovens that I am willing to wipe out (I use my degreaser cleaner need and a green scrubby pad, so it's more than just a wipe, but I don't have perfection as a goal.)

OOps. I meant to say I use the degreaser concentrate NEAT, not "need." Anyway, never mind.

Can't beat a brillo pad

Doesn't matter if it looks brand new or not ... it's an oven Confused

I'm not aiming for new-looking, just "ooh, you've cleaned the oven!" :)

Watching with interest. Anyone know how to clean a self cleaning oven? I thought I couldn't use stuff like oven pride as it will affect self clean properties. It's filthy!

Surely you shouldn't need to clean a self-cleaning oven??

Rummikub · 15/07/2013 11:10

I know I thought that too. There's a self clean setting I've put on but there was lots of smoke and I got scared and turned it off!

cakesonatrain · 15/07/2013 11:50

I think self-clean ovens clean.themselves they get extra-hot and burn all the crud off, so smoke would be expected?
