Fitted sheets - how do I make them last?

I bought 2 fitted sheets for our king size bed 4 years ago and one of them had a huge tear (from wear) last week. I can see the other one is going as well and I am rather disappointed. The 2 duvet covers I bought 3 years ago from the same company (Homescapes, via Amazon) are still in good condition.

The sheets were thread count 400, Egyptian cotton satin stripe and they were about £20 each. I change bedding twice a month and the sheets are washed at 60 celcius and air dried.

What am I doing wrong? They always feel really tight on the bed when I make it, should I buy a size up? I really think they should have lasted longer.

Are your heels or your partners heels rough? this can wear them.

Damn, I think you are right! The wear in the one sheet that we have left has the wear marks where DH's feet are! Up until he had a pedicure recently, he did have very rough heels, I just kind of forgot about it. Will make sure he gets another pedicure ;)
