IKEA Hemnes daybed

We are thinking of buying this for DS (6) - does anyone have this already and if so, what do you think? The drawers underneath will be great for storage and we need the flexibility of it turning into a double for when grandparents come to visit (one weekend every couple of months).

I am slightly worried that the foam mattresses wont be supportive enough - do you think they will be ok for a child to sleep on? Apparently you have one on top of the other when it is in single mode, so would that increase the support level? Thanks!

We have one for dd. the space underneath is great!

We have only one mattress at the moment (didn't have room in the car to get two), and it's more than ok. I've spent a good few hours in with her on various nights and felt comfortable.

Only thing to keep in mind is the mattress width is narrower by just a bit than standard uk single, but I've used regular fitted single sheets and they've been fine.

I've also been interested in this bed but unsure of the mattress so I'll be watching for others' feedback.
Of course, one option is to pull bed out from wall a little and slide double matress down the side of the bed and to put a decent single mattress on, then just swap round for visitors?

Runs, I thought it came with a fold out mattress so it's normal thickness when a single and half thickness when a double bed?

We have it in our guest bedroom and is great. We use two single ikea mattresses. So it's double height when it's a single. It's not a problem for occasional use. Not sure if it will be ok if you double up the mattresses for daily use.

We have one in the playroom Ikea do various different grade of mattress to go with it. They are not the same size as a normal mattress.

I wouldn't want to sleep on it permanently but it would be fine for a child.

Our drawers jam quite frequently but they are very useful storage.

We have one and I am not happy with it at all. It is flimsy and the slats underneath are bent and broken so the second bed does not pull out properly. You need the thicker mattress but that then makes the bed too high. The two thin ones just slid apart and DS landed on the floor!

Would not recommend but if you desperately want one and are near Edinburgh, I will sell you ours!

We have this and DD (2) has just moved into it (well, kid of). We have the two 80cm mattresses but just use one on the bed for her. When it was more in use as a sofa in her room we had the two on there and we've used them side by side as a double too.

I think it's quite comfy to be honest and the drawer space is fab. We store the second mattress behind the bed now. It's quite thin so easy to do.

We have one in the guest room and love it. Found it to be good quality actually - have has it for 8 years now I think. Did buy slightly better mattresses from IKEA to go with it.

I've just got ours ready for its first guests! The ikea foam mattresses seem really comfortable, and quite firm, but I've not spent a night on it yet. It's bigger then I'd imagined.

We've had one for years and it's still great! You can get proper mattresses to go on it, which is what we did. It's not really possible to sleep on them stacked double though, they're too high and wobbly. We've had no problems with the drawers or slats. We did have a handyman to put it together, who said it was a nightmare to get right.

We've had this bed for ages. Pre DC was just as a spare bed (and whilst house was being renovated DH and I slept on it for months)
Bed now belongs to DS. He's been in it since he was 3 and loves it. We only use one mattress for DS otherwise it's too high.
We all think it's very comfy and the drawers are big too

Ours has two memory foam mattresses, which I find too high to use comfortably to sit on when one is on top of the other (single bed mode). Instead, I just keep one of the mattresses on the bed (which is comfortable as it is a thicker mattress), and I keep the other under my bed stored in an old duvet cover.

If I need it as a double bed, I just add the second mattress. I did see someone selling one on eBay once who had bought thicker mattresses too - they had stored the second mattress behind the bed and built a small, removable shelf to go above it.

I slept as a guest on one with the single mattress thickness and it was horrible! Definitely recommend a better mattress if it's to be used for more than a night or two.

I'm relaxing on my day bed right now and it's fab! Comfy to sleep on, loads of storage underneath and looks great too. Bought ours off ebay :-) We use ours in our 'den' room which has the bed as a sofa (iyswim) with a tv & wii set up too. I slept on it earlier this week and it was lovely. Buy it, you won't regret it!

I've had no trouble with sticking drawers, slats all completely fine. Put it together myself without any problem (thinking I'll join Ruby in new job)

Ds1 has one of these, and he loves his bed! We have two mattresses stacked on it with no problems at all - as someone upthread said, they are narrower than single size, but with single fitted sheet over both, it fits perfectly.
I did get joiner who was doing stuff in the house to put it together, and after 4 years of constant use it's still in perfect working order!

For those that use 2 foam mattresses stacked on top of each other in single mode, is this ok to do for everyday use or is it recommended that you store one elsewhere? Will foam mattresses last?

I like the idea of buying a sprung mattress for it but we also will need to use it as a double for grandparents, so still need two mattresses of the same height for when they come to stay. We have nowhere to store an extra one. Hmmm, are the foam ones in double mode sufficient for weekend use for grandparents (don't want them crippled)!! Thanks

the ikea foam matresses come with a long warranty (10y I think). the thin ones are ok for a child but not for constant use by an adult I would say.
