steam mops, I know, but I need help!

so after seeing one in action (Lauriefairycake) I really think I need one, but then I go read reviews and cant make up my mind.

I have all wooden floors downstairs, 2 large dogs, tiles in kitchen, bathrooms and fully tiled upstairs bathroom.

I need a mop that isnt too heavy, cleans well, doesnt leave my wooden floors wet, is hardcore and wont break after 5 minutes. I also want it to clean my windows, bathroom glass and tiles too.

So, lets have your recommendations and reasons behind.

I love my steam mop. Cheap - £20 in the sales from Asda, only reduced from £30. I have solid wood floors, 4 DCs and a dog and, muddiest of all, a DH.
I sweep daily - sometimes more than once! - but Hoover every few days. Steam clean well once a week or more often when there are muddy footprints everywhere washable pads go in the washer.

but what brand is it Mushroom? I need one that can do floors and then be a cleaner and do tiles/windows etc.

no you cant lurk - you have to give thoughts to what steamy thing to get.

I have a list, but keep changing my mind. reviews are always hit and miss and I dont want to buy it and use it once and sit in a cupboard.

I don't have any good ideas yet so you're way ahead of me - perhaps you could share your list and then I might be a step nearer than I am!

right, I have had a look at good housekeeping online and they tested steam mops and cleaners... but they all get decent ratings - back to square one.

I have the Vax one - the cheaper one that you don't need detergent in. It is great. I got an additional blue mop head as the microfibre ones that came with it are not great. The only thing I am not keen on is that they smell a bit. I have tried putting ironing water and also tried using a bit of zoflora but am still not keen. I used to have a very cheap one from ebay which was also good, but you had no trigger to control the steam. It just steamed as soon as it was on iyswim.

this is the one I am considering....it has good reviews, is a good price and looks small enough to store but I am worried about using it on (and damaging) wooden floors.

What does Good Housekeeping say about the Vax one? I'm also considering signing up to Which? for a month for research purposes...the Polti Pocket also sounds OK.

Also have the Vax one, and ditto buying the replacement mop heads as they are better. It is on sale at Argos at the moment down to £50. I luffs it so much it is embarrassing. I find the trigger for steam useful, as some spots need lots of steam and others just need a wipe with a damp cloth, really. But I do put the detergent in as well. Oh, and it steams carpets too.

I can tell you what which says at some stage but probably not this evening (busy).

What Which? say would be a big help to me.... thanks. I like the sound of being able to steam carpets as well...I think I am swaying towards the Vax one. I am hopeful it might make less of a slattern on the floor cleaning front if I have a new gadget.

I have a really cheap Lakeland one, and it's brill. I just put tap water in it (although it says not to Smile but I'm not buying distilled water for it). I use it with the dettol squirty floor cleaner that dries really quick. No problems with it, and bung the cleaning pad in the washing machine.

But the ones you like are just mops - I need one that splits and cleans other stuff too.

I've got a shark one too

sooo much easier than getting the mop out so it gets done more frequently

my cream grout is starting to look cream again!

also use it on the wooden floor in my living room, just turn the steam down

my front door opens straight into the living room so it gets used most days since the dcs don't seem to know how to take their shoes off!

This Karcher one was the other one I was looking at - it does tiles and floors, but it is £££ compared the the vax one. The shark ones look a similar sort of price.

I went for this one from Lakeland. Very pleased with it for wooden floors, but less impressed for grout, though I suspect the dirt/mould is just too ingrained.
