We moved from the US and rented a house. The realtor will not release the keys without seeing our passports and valid visas. We have already paid and signed the lease. My husband picked up one set but they refused the second set without seeing my passport. Is this the norm? Hated dealing with the realtor, they were unprofessional and often rude.

Yes completely normal and I think (others can correct me) a legal requirement so I'm surprised they gave you one set already

I believe landlords have to verify identity of their tenants.

Ok thank you. They have offer letter from employer thoug and had accepted an enormous amount of deposit Money with the signed lease. I have a visa so that isn't the issue, I'm just annoyed at the company, they are awful.

I also sent them a copy of my passport/ visa but they said this wasn't good enough

Yes, we have had to do this. It's part of the awful'right to rent' stuff. Your estate agent isn't foxtons is it?

Legally they need to certify to say they have seen the original documents.
