Do Home Ed children do activities like horse riding, tennis, swimming lessons etc during the school day?

Just wondering if there are better rates during the day for individual sports lessons, and if Home Ed children take advantage of this in general or tend towards group activities when they are put on after school?

Hello Zirca.

We tend to use tutors during the day 1 to 1, for some music lessons, and Italian. Then dd has group activities alongside schooled friends because this is when they are offered. Obviously, the schools dc can only attend after school.
you may find areas with H.ed co-ops or larger groups who can do this type of thing, but there aren't that many H.ed dc in our area.
This doesn't bother dd as she sees a lot of her friends during the week or week end if free.
Not sure if this helps at all.

Not everything is on offer during school hours. Swimming lessons in particular are only after school when the pool can be sure of filling them. Though perhaps the instructors would offer private lessons (pricey). General pool use is cheaper daytime and our group hires one for a hour each week (but no instructor). The group also organises multisports for a small fee (1 - in schools it's free here).
Horse riding is on offer at stables but would be more expensive as you would have to book a private lesson (assuming there was just one of you) and you wouldn't get a group rate unless you joined an evening group lesson.
So from my experience sports lessons are not cheaper.

Sorry OP

I meant to say, we don't get a reduction but in the case of tutors it works out better having them during the day, of course you can both be flexible and you can fit in the extra curricular things in groups after school hours, instead of missing these for lessons iyswim.
We found tutors really like us as well and even go over time for no extra cost as they are usually freer during the day. Obviously, their peak times are after school and work.

Some things can be cheaper, like horse riding lessons, others often less crowded, like ice rinks and museums :) more time and less pushing!

Oh yes, good point made above. Sometimes there is worse availability during school hours, but my local stables do group lessons for adults who don't work or work flexible hours during the day and kids and teens were welcome to join in as lessons were grouped on experience rather than age. Also cheaper if you are having private lessons or on your own horse usually.

There are a couple of HE groups in my county that have clubbed together to have a HE sports session run during the day. If you can get enough people interested you could organise something like that.

Hi, we do a HE swimming group during the day and also a HE sports group. There is also a horse riding group. We get group rates and they tend to be good because no-one else is using the facilities during the day.

my girls have horseriding lessons on a Tuesday morning a lot cheaper than they would be in peak times. We go swimming when it's quiet. A lot of activities are still only available as after school clubs tho.
