Have you been growing a whopper of a pumpkin for Halloween? Or shop bought is fine

Do you and your DC carve a Jack O' Lantern every year? Or do you just want to show off your artistic brilliance?

Upload a picture of your pumpkin here for us all to howl ogle over and any top carving tips/pumpkin recipes you have, do share.

NormaStanleyFletcher Wed 24-Oct-12 13:24:12

Too early for carving mine at the mo - or they sill shrivel and rot, so marking place...

BorisTheBold Wed 24-Oct-12 13:45:56

This is one I did last year, haven't decided on this year's yet. I usually use a template from Zombie Pumpkins - they have loads.

BorisTheBold Wed 24-Oct-12 13:50:16

Waah, it wont post - have uploaded to profile instead.

vodkaanddietirnbru Wed 24-Oct-12 13:57:09

I have a few photos from previous years on my profile too. I normally get templates from here

kittykitty Wed 24-Oct-12 14:49:43

My brother's done a cracking one for his audience - it's Nightmare Before Christmas inspired

kittykitty Wed 24-Oct-12 14:50:15

sorry - that didn't work - here it is

CinnabarRed Wed 24-Oct-12 15:03:53

Ladies, your work is amazing! Where can I get one of those pokey saw things from? The ones you can use to do the fiddly bits?

NotActuallyAMum Wed 24-Oct-12 15:09:51

Bugger! Last year I did a headless horseman, a koala, Spongebob Squarepants, Buzz Lightyear and a haunted house...but my mobile has since broken and that was the only place I had photos of them

<sulks>

Catsmamma Wed 24-Oct-12 15:12:57

And look at the door!!

Catsmamma Wed 24-Oct-12 15:16:29

Catsmamma Wed 24-Oct-12 15:17:26

Carving tips: A steady hand and a sharp knife, the scalpel/craft knife sets from poundland are excellent for any peeling type work you need to do.

If you are doing designs involving skin peeling, do that first before thinning and scooping out the excess flesh

Ditto Poundland for battery tealights in case of a windy Hallowe'en

Old style ice cream scoop is invaluable for scooping the flesh out

Draw the design on with a pencil/ water soluble pen, you can remove that with a licked finger damp cloth when you are done

AND super top tip is to spray them inside and out with WD40.....it really does help them keep.....normally I'd get 2-3 days out of a "thin" pumpkin, and the heavier ones will start to squelch also if it is mild, but I got over a week out of most of them last year. Do the spraying outside though, and no they do not go up in a puff of smoke if you put a candle in them! :D

CinnabarRed Wed 24-Oct-12 15:35:21

Someone tell me where to get the equipment please! Saws, I need pointy saws.

CinnabarRed Wed 24-Oct-12 15:36:46

Poundland, gotcha.

DH is going to freak when he sees my shopping list.

CinnabarRed Wed 24-Oct-12 15:37:18

But I still need a pokey pointy saw....

Home bargains, wilkinsons, pound/bargain shops have the carving kits. I'll try and find last years pumpkin pic, never uploaded a picture though, not sure how...

vodkaanddietirnbru Wed 24-Oct-12 16:18:18

Dh got me a carving kit from Asda

Here goes:

DoubleDoubleTwigletTrouble Wed 24-Oct-12 16:20:58

This is my favourite one smile

Here's an old one, ds was too small to help with the carving so he covered it with glue and sparkles instead. smile

I did this in 2010 as my first ever attempt at a pumpkin. Am looking for inspiration for this year smile

Tizwozliz Wed 24-Oct-12 18:44:33

Too early for this years, so I've uploaded a previous effort

Pumpkins I've carved in the last 5 years

ninjanurse Wed 24-Oct-12 18:56:31

Oh tizwoz - I love the stars one! I may steal that idea this year!

Too early for this year (and I suspect I won't do one this year due to imminent arrival of DC1!) So this is last year's effort..

BrianCoxIsEatingBrains Wed 24-Oct-12 20:34:11

This is my first ever attempt at carving something other than a scary face. It was from last year and friends/family/trick or treaters were very impressed.

Liking all the other ideas on here, I will have to get my ideas planned - I want to do 2 this year for on top of the porch.

Great idea about battery operated tea lights - thank you smile

These are brilliant!

AnEerieAirOfHorror Wed 24-Oct-12 20:56:48

Too early yet but marking place smile

Pinterest is great for ideas too if you need inspiration.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 27-Oct-12 19:47:59

Pumpkin fun in our house this weekend.
The DC did them, with a little help grin

On the iPad so fingers crossed this works?

Thanks all for your fabulous pumpkin pics, we have made a gallery on Pinterest if you wanted to have a look/ share with your friends.

Please do keep uploading your pics.
Happy halloween grin

RebeccaMumsnet how did you do it on an iPad? I didn't think it could be done.

These are all amazing!!

vodkaanddietirnbru Tue 30-Oct-12 12:39:29

halloween bat

LoosingBattle Tue 30-Oct-12 12:54:43

I was sooooo proud of mine....until I saw the rest! Gives me inspiration for next year though!

I printed off a template, sellotaped it to my pumpkin, went round outline making holes with a kitchen skewer then joined up the holes with a little screwdriver.

AWimbaWay Tue 30-Oct-12 13:43:23

A green pumpkin.

AWimbaWay Tue 30-Oct-12 13:46:38

And the kids from last year, have spent all morning making this year's, I now have a bruised wrist from hollowing them out!

ZombTEE Tue 30-Oct-12 13:52:11

These are really good!

That's mine. I have no idea what that indentation between the eyes is...

AmberLeaf Tue 30-Oct-12 13:54:39

These are brilliant! and pictures in posts shock wow! is that just for this topic?

AWimbaWay Tue 30-Oct-12 14:15:16

Whilst on the topic of pumpkins, I've just made soup with the mountains of scooped out flesh but it tastes really bland. I added onion, coriander, coconut milk, vegetable stock cube, a blob of butter and pepper, what else can I add to give it more substance and taste?

OttersPocket Tue 30-Oct-12 14:24:04

DP did this one freehand last year - I was vair impressed! We had no candles in the house, hence the upside-down lamp sticking out of the top!

OttersPocket Tue 30-Oct-12 14:25:45

Oh bugger - that didn't seem to work.

OttersPocket Tue 30-Oct-12 14:26:31

Oh, it did work - argh! Ignore me confused blush

AWimbaWay Tue 30-Oct-12 14:41:31

i didn't think mine had worked at first either OttersPocket, obviously takes a while for the pics to load.

AWimbaWay Tue 30-Oct-12 16:30:50

This years.

Last year's.

I'm currently knitting an ear for a Werepumpkin - will get that, plus its friends Pharoah Pump-Hotep, Vlad Pumpkin and Frankenstein's Pumpkin, up when finished.

planestrainsautomobiles Tue 30-Oct-12 17:41:58

Last try

Ok experts let me in on the secret. How do you get the orange skin off while leaving bits of the flesh in tact. If you can't tell me I'll sulk!

minesapackofminstrels Tue 30-Oct-12 17:52:51

AWimbaWay try adding some thai red curry paste if you have any. I often make a soup with butternut squash, coconut milk, stock and thai red curry paste that is yummy. Am planning to try it with pumpkin later.

itsnotjustaslap Tue 30-Oct-12 18:04:25

Pumpkin Wolf - has this worked?

itsnotjustaslap Tue 30-Oct-12 18:04:54

No envy

MadBusLadyHauntsTheMetro Tue 30-Oct-12 18:06:27

Anything like squash/pumpkin soup I make with paprika, I suppose a similar idea to the thai curry. If you do the curry option, you can use it as the sauce for a fish curry - just poach some fish/prawns in it for the last 20 mins or so. I think it's Nigella I got that from.

MadBusLadyHauntsTheMetro Tue 30-Oct-12 18:07:34

I can see it Slap, it's awesome. These are all just amazing!

<goes back to humbly making soup>

itsnotjustaslap Tue 30-Oct-12 18:14:23

Thanks MadbusLady It did work!

singaporefling Tue 30-Oct-12 18:41:27

And another....

vodkaanddietirnbru Tue 30-Oct-12 18:43:00

I can see the first 2 of your pictures singaporefling - they take a while to come up on screen when you first post them

vodkaanddietirnbru Tue 30-Oct-12 18:44:25

I can see the last one you posted too. She must have decent tools for the removal of the skin - I had to make do with a wee plastic pumpkin poker and a sharp kitchen knife

AWimbaWay Tue 30-Oct-12 18:56:00

Some of these are fab. Thanks for the cooking tips, thai curry paste, great idea!

BorisTheBold Tue 30-Oct-12 21:51:26

Will give up if this doesn't work!

And a scary witch

JollyJackOLantern Tue 30-Oct-12 22:06:00

We bought ours on Thursday and carved them Friday.

On Monday we came home from work to find they had melted. That was somewhat unpleasant to clean up.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 30-Oct-12 22:09:37

Just found this one online.
It's had me laughing so thought I'd share grin

vodkaanddietirnbru Tue 30-Oct-12 22:11:09

I carved one on sunday and another on monday. I sprayed the cut edges with wd40 to protect them a bit (you can use vaseline too) and they are still ok. I had to stick the one from sunday in a basin of cold water today as it was starting to curl a bit at the cut edges - I then dried it off a bit and resprayed with wd40. Hoping they will both last till tomorrow night.

vodkaanddietirnbru Wed 31-Oct-12 21:59:08

Well, I have NO idea how that happened.

Ghoulies Wed 31-Oct-12 22:50:04

LOVE these! grin The sugar skull/dia dos muertos one is fab.

Here's mine. I've always wanted to do one of these. Unfortunately, DS1 was very saddened because the big nasty one was eating his baby pumpkin. sad Maybe I should've waited a few more years?

OhlimpPricks Wed 31-Oct-12 22:54:10

Not my work, funny nonetheless!

Ghoulies Wed 31-Oct-12 23:00:11

Here's a shot of the poor baby pumpkin (who has his own battery tealight). I'm going to have to get DS1 another one, aren't I?

Pumpkins carved by my friend Carla - she has been doing it for years - and more amazingly - carved them for us while chatting - freehand - no marker on them - just did them - She is amazing...!

IwishIwasmoreorganised Thu 01-Nov-12 22:11:43

How do you do the ones where some of the skin is taken off, leaving just the fleshy part?

Does the skin come off easily?

ErrorError Fri 02-Nov-12 01:15:02

You can buy special pumpkin carving tools but I used a combination of various sized knives, potato peeler and a screwdriver! Think the texture is like a butternut squash.

Jas Fri 02-Nov-12 09:57:10

I also use a screwdriver!

IwishIwasmoreorganised Fri 02-Nov-12 19:45:14

That might be a job for me then rather that our ds's (4 and 7).

I bought the carving tools this year, but it didn't include anything that would have got the skin off very successfully.

I must plan next years more in advance!
