Decorating large room from scratch

Going round in circles trying to make decisions. It's going to be a sitting and dining room, with a log burner at one end. It has mostly wall lights, and a centre one above where table will be. Furniture I have already and can't afford to replace- IKEA ektorp sofas (but I could buy new covers) and reclaimed pine furniture. There are 2 bigger windows and 2 small ones either side of fire (only 60cm wide). The room is vaguely cottagey in feeling as it has white painted beams, but I don't want to do a country cottage look particularly.
I'm all pinterested out- someone help me!

Just to be clear, I need to choose everything- lights, wall covering and colour, curtains/blinds, the fire and hearth, cushions etc...

Try houzz.com

Can you show a few pictures of rooms you like the look of? You don't have to pin down why at this stage. Are there any particular colours you like?

Look at house/pinterest at some broad trends (I think Houzz is searchable by categories like traditional/modern/contemporary/eclectic etc).

Sounds like the room gets plenty of natural light? Is it north/south/east/west facing? It sounds like it gets light from two aspects actually.

What type of floor do you have? Is the woodburner modern or traditional looking? Any other fixed or period features to incorporate? Are there any themes you like - natural elements, plants, traditional handicrafts, eastern-inspired, geometrics?

White painted beams says Scandi/New England to me.

Are you up for painting the furniture or is it too nice for that (iyswim)?

Yes what is the flooring like?

Also do you have small children or dogs i.e. do you need to avoid light colours?

Sorry for very slow reply
Yes kids and pets!
I like Kilim rugs, greenery/botanics and rustic/reclaimed furniture. This rug for example here
Stove is likely to be a morso like this, still undecided on hearth.
I don't want the room to be too cold/bare despite liking that style on Pinterest, so I need to know how to do curtains/rugs without it looking country...

Oh the room is very light by the way- broadly south facing and dual aspect.
No I don't think I'm up for painting the furniture...

I'd suggest choosing the curtains/blinds first as its much easier to find a paint to work with fabric than the other way round.
Browse John Lewis for lighting ideas and perhaps get the rug you linked to - the rug, stove and the curtains make a good base to work from.
Perhaps copper or cast iron light fittings to complement the stove and rug?
Plain sofa covers (white would look good but appreciate not practical) with cushions in a mix of fabrics, linen, slubby silk, modern floral patterns....
OKA has lovely cushions and lamps, expensive but good for inspiration, look at H&M for cushions too.

That's really helpful, thank you. What kind of curtains do you think would go with the rug? I'm thinking lineny texture maybe? i would love white Sofa covers but I can't trust myself with them let alone the kids Grin Was looking at H&M cushions funnily enough.

Yes linen type curtains would work well, you could always get some IKEA AINA ones (100% linen in cream, beige or pale grey) which are only £45 and trial those (easy to sell on ebay if you change your mind).

Perhaps linen coloured sofas rather than white, combined with rich velvet cushions to mix up the textures?
Big footstools and table/standard lamps for making it cosy...

Nice pics justaweeone
I like them all, but particularly the linen cushions in number 2, and the coffee table in the last picture. The black with the paler colours is nice too- gives a scandi/industrial feel I think.
