I would paint the wood ceiling white immediately and wallpaper the back wall in a really cute paper with flowers or bird cages in a turquoise pallet and put a double bed with white wrought iron frame in the middle of the back wall. I would have fluffy cream rugs, vintage leather suitcases in a pile for storage/bedside tables and lamps with glass shades.

Orange pine has got to go - paint over with a chalky white, pale floorboards, chandelier dangly thing from ceiling, that would be a lovely light space.

This is the kind of thing I imagined when I read your OP

What FauxFox said. To the letter.

Add some plants. Philodendrons.

I would try curtains for the windows on runners like this...probably in a ditsy print - I think blinds are a bit harsh for a bedroom...

I would paint the ceiling and have bigger veluxes put in.

Ok, great - love it! Was staring at that pine and sort of wondering how to make it disappear. I'm on the slightly more modern side of shabby chic (not frilly) - my bed is iron but a tester with a linen drape.

I think it will fit in.

Do you think I'd need to do more than paint it white? Any chance the 'stripes' of the ceiling would still be over obvious?

And I'd definitely have panels rather than blinds - think that would look fab.

I'm slightly concerned it will be too hot up there in summer ( it's London) - so it's possible (but I don't really fancy it) it would be better as the living room.

I would do something similar to this.

A clean, calm space decorated with shades of warm white, soft grey and pale blue. A few simple pieces of furniture and a large bed.

I would paint all the woodwork white and strip the floor back to boards. I'd also build low bookshelves along the length of one wall.

Can you tell I have young children and my house is a chaotic riot of coloured plastic!

I'd want a bigger window than that in an attic room, so I'd immediately get those replaced. I also think, as others have said, the space would look infinitely better in all off-white.
