Halll, Stairs and landing - all one colour or two?

We live in a victorian house, the hall has a wooden floor, the stairs are carpeted in a striped carpet that's beigeish with burnt orange and brownish stripes.
There is a dado rail and a picture rail as well as deep skirt and coving that will be white.
Currently there is a darker shade under the dado, lighter up to it and white above it.
We are trying to choose a lightish neutral colour but cant decide whether to go one colour or two again.
Is there a received wisdom please?
We are utterly daunted by having to choose!

If it's a dado I think you can go either way and do what you like! For higher (picture) rails I think it's usual to match it to the ceiling or at least have a lighter colour. Have you tried looking on Pinterest for examples? You will get a better idea of what they look like and it might help you decide one way or the other!

No idea about received wisdom but I would probably do one darker colour between skirting and dado and then white from there up.

In my last house, I did a light grey blue up to the picture rail (same colour above and below the dado) then ceiling colour (F&B Pointing) above the picture rail. Woodwork was all Pointing too but in eggshell finish.

It looked fantastic.

The hallway was long and narrow with natural light only at the end. The paint job made it feel wider and brighter.
