Wool carpet in a house that has moths - Madness?

We're getting new carpet and I have been agonising for months over this. It's time to ask mumsnet. We have moths - the moth expert says they are from our clothes, and the current carpet, which was here when we moved in, is probably synthetic.
We are clearing out our wardrobes, getting rid of woollens, and the moth guy is going to come in with the insecticide :(.

The carpet I want is 100% wool and has been moth treated. But despite the moth treatment and the insecticide, I still have a feeling that it would be stupid to tempt fate by getting a wool carpet. Don't like the idea of polyprop, but maybe I should just get over myself.

Any thoughts? TIA

I never saw a moth until we moved and I'm sure it it was to do with the carpets We're left in the house. That and the fact that I think the lady that was here before had a lot of clothes u disturbed and stuffed in wardrobes.

It's never got too bad, despite me going into panic mode. I buy a lot of moth stuff, have the carpets cleaned and keep vigilant. However as we've decorated we've changed some carpets and have had the 'dreaded' polypropylene ones in the dc's rooms. Not just for moth reasons, it's true - dd gets her makeup on things and does art gcse so we've had a few things on the carpet to scrub off. Tbh the carpets we got arent at all bad despite the polypropylene reputation.

Tbh, lovely though wool is, if you already have a moth problem Id steer clear.

I wouldn't do it, we've had moths, I would never have wool carpet again.

Ripping out the wool carpets and replacing with polyprop seems to have got rid of them.

Polyprop all the way here Smile

I'd rather have moths than synthetic carpet... We inherited some of each with this house, and currently saving to replace with wool. Keep it clean and vacuumed, and don't put semi-clean clothes back in the wardrobe: if you wear them once, they should be washed first, or at the very least thoroughly aired.

thanks for your responses. Any more opinions: I'm still undecided! Does anyone know if wool carpets that are "moth treated" really do keep moths away?

We have just got rid of a wool carpet which was riddled with moths. They had eaten through it in a hallway cupboard and built in wardrobe. I got so fed up with seeing them on the walls and on the skirting boards and feeling like I had to keep on top of the problem by constant hoovering, checking and I was worried they'd move onto my clothes. I loved loved the carpet but would probably never get one again....sorry but I think if you already have a problem with moths a wool carpet is definitely not a good idea......carpets are such an expense anyway why risk it?

I don't think I could bear to risk it, myself. The only thing that tamed the moths in my old flat was ripping out all the carpet and taking it back to wood.

We got a Berber carpet that is mainly polyprop but has some wool in it. Everyone tinks it is wool, could you try a blend to minimise risk?

My house seems to breed moths so most of the rooms just have rugs over sanded floors. We put moth-treated carpet in DD's room and it is holding up so far (8 years on) though the moths have taken a couple of munches out of the circular wool rugs we bought to put on top (to cover potential unsupervised felt tip/paint/drink stains).
