Looking for inspiration for creating a tasteful yellow and pink room...

dd2 (5) has been nagging to redecorate her room, and as she has not actually slept in it for three years (another story) I have agreed with her that if she sleeps in her room she gets it redone.

She is insistent she wants it yellow and pink. These are not colours that I feel comfortable with, but I"m sure there must be a way to keep me and her happy. Has anybody seen anything lovely to inspire me, or can give advice from their own experience?

Some factors:

  • I've always insisted on keeping the girls' rooms white, because I am not up for redecorating every time they change their favourite colour. I think I may have been a teensy bit purist on this, but I still want to ensure that the room is sufficiently neutral to be with us for awhile.

  • I'm not up for buying loads of new furniture, but I am up for upcycling. She has a pink metal bed I can paint, and an Ikea wardrobe I'm thinking of painting and adding wallpaper to the panels.

  • carpet is beige and a bit knackered. Room is sunny and south-facing, 2nd floor overlooking the garden.

  • I'm thinking a vintage feel will probably carry through these colours most successfully.

I was going to suggest vintagey fairy grotto feel. Yellow vase with pink fake flowers, pink and yellow fairy lights, predominantly pink floral bedding? Try lemon almost white yellow instead of canary? I hate yellow so much so you're already braver than me Grin

DD's room has one mid-yellow wall and the rest white. If I were to look at adding another colour (and I'm sure she will insist soon), I would use spray adhesive and fabric to cover the doors on ikea cabinets (I've previously used movable type of spray which means you can change it again later). Hmm, what else? Patchwork-y cushions or blankets maybe, a beanbag, a child's rug (not usually that pricey). Wall decals that could be removed later on?

I reckon with new bed linen and maybe lampshade and curtains, you could get it to "feel" pink and yellow enough to your DD, but actually it wouldn't involve that much permanent change.

You can call it the Battenburg room Grin
mine is more like custard

I love a deep mustardy yellow, StayGold, but yellow yellow is definitely out of my comfort zone. I'm thinking a dark pink may be less icky than pale.

Unidentified, that's interesting about movable kind of spray - what is that?

OK, so I've found some wallpaper which is white with pink and yellow birds, butterflies and flowers - very vintage - and that would work well on the wardrobe. I'll paint the rest of the wardrobe off white. There is a cupboard which is white with dark pink doors - I'll leave that. The chest of drawers is white with pine drawer fronts - think I may paint the drawer fronts dark pink also. Then pink/yellow duvet cover and a cheap rug. Blind stays white. Yellow lamp. Maybe yellow/pink rug. Walls stay white, maybe with wall stickers to mirror the wallpaper. If i end up succumbing on the white walls, it will be for a very pale yellow that doesn't scream SUNNY!!!!! as soon as you open the door.

Why can't she be into orange and green like her sister Sad

Bought ours from hobbycraft, but sure other options are available. We used this one, which has been holding cotton fabric against glass bookcase doors for about six months so far:

Also wondered about bunting for your DDs room (from etsy if you don't fancy making), and maybe a look on Pinterest for inspiration - although it sounds like you have a plan sorted now!

Thanks for that, Unidentified. I didn't know repositionable spray even existed - that will save a lot of grief further down the line Smile

Try a pastel yellow worth pastel pink. Like Dolly Mxtures or Love Hearts. Not too pale though
