underlay for wood flooring? Stupid question.

Hi you wonderful mntters. Could I please ask for your advice regarding changing underlay for a new wood floor. I currently have a carpet with a thick underlay. Can I use this underlay for a wood floor? Has anyone done this? Am I being really stupid in suggesting it. Thanks
