Would grey walls and a grey sofa be too... grey?

I'd love to paint my living room and dining room (two small rooms separated by sliding doors in a Victorian terrace) grey - probably something like F&B Strong White with F&B Lamp Room Grey in alcoves/chimney breast. But I also really want a darker grey or charcoal sofa.

I would have white ceilings and woodwork, wooden floors (either caramel oak or painted white boards) and accent colours for a rug, cushions etc. would be teal, duck egg and yellow, with some splashes of magenta.

Does it sound too grey to have grey walls and a sofa? I'm more set on the grey sofa as it's my favourite neutral colour that will go with lots of different soft furnishings and paint colours in the future.

Depends a great deal on the amount and quality of light the rooms get and what's outside the windows.

If they are sunny rooms with gardens outside it will be tranquill and inviting.

If they aren't, it could be rather dreary and pretentious looking.

I think it could look great. Maybe google or Pinterest some images of similar rooms. I have certainly seen this in home decor magazines or somewhere like the John Lewis home brochure recently and it looked very stylish.

I would go for the oak floor rather than white and as long as you have fairly bright accessories I think it will definitely work and look v stylish Smile

Thanks all. What I have in mind is similar to the attached picture I found. It looks good in that at least...

It's not for me but decorate your home how you want. Don't be scared. You can always buy paint if it's too cold. Or warm it up with cushions and candlesticks.

I really like that room, yellow really warms it up and you could change the accessorising colour with the seasons. Our bedroom has grey walls, white bedlinen and orange and grey cushions, orange warms it up nicely in the colder seasons I think.

Looks great. They have got a lot of white in there too which looks good.

I have grey walls and had ordered a grey sofa before changing my mind at the last minute. I'm so glad I did. We have a light heather colour sofa and it looks really good. I took inspiration from the top photograph but may try and go a big holder with accessories like with the second photo.

My friend has grey walls, grey carpet and grey sofa's and her house looks dark.

Grey is seemingly everywhere! I am thinking of light grey walls with dark grey shutters, pale wooden floor, one dark grey sofa and one teal sofa. With a bright rug, maybe yellow.

Think grey, teal and yellow work well in a room but it might look like the room is straight from an Ideal Homes magazine.

Love the heather sofa, lush!

We have Laura Ashley Josette wallpaper in grey all over our living room, with a dark grey carpet and sofa. Woodwork and above the picture rail are white, and the furniture, shelves and blinds are oak. It's restful and quite modern despite being a fairly traditional pattern on the wallpaper.

The plastic mountain of primary coloured toys belonging to the DC don't exactly set it off beautifully, but I think I'd get into trouble if I threw the toys away for the sake of aesthetics!

Oh and we have a big purple armchair in the corner. I originally had to decorate the room around the utterly hideous brave choice of suite DH bought before we met, but then he broke the sofa so agreed I could have a nicer one.

Not if you brighten it up - red or purple would look lovely. We have a grey room with red accessories - a rug, candles, artwork and floor lamps.

We've just done our walls grey with one wall papered wall which is grey white and dark grey stripe . Then we bought a black sofa we nearly went with grey but thought it might be too much . We've also added teal lamp and cushions and light shade it looks really nice . Even if I do say so myself Smile
