Paint ceiling first, over wall. Then paint walls a mm or two below ceiling. Or use a paper border!

Or have white ceiling and walls.

No, forget the masking tape.

Firstly, make sure you paint the ceiling first if you are doing it. Always work from top to bottom.

Then get a 2" brush (good quality) and run it along at a 45 degree angle. You should do it in a fairly fluid, but careful motion. If you need to, try it a bit further down, then go over again closer to the edge as you become more confident.

If you are especially careful what you can do is, with a sparsely loaded brush and the bristles at right angles to the edge, gently nudge the bristles towards the edge.

If you are anything like me this will work well for several minutes then you will fuck it up.

Every time. I never learn.

Masking tape will pull the ceiling paint off.

Use a small brush and be really careful. Theres a knack you'll develop with practice. In the meantime get a kids paintbrush to go over any mistakes with ceiling paint.
