Sticks for closing/opening tall curtains

Help, my curtains are really high up and I can't reach properly to open and close them. I think I need some stick things to fasten to the curtains to help me move them without breaking the hooks. I don't know what they are called or where to get them.

They're called draw rods. You can get them from John Lewis. Probably also mail order (e.g. Amazon) or DIY stores like Homebase.
