Colour of internal doors- advice.

Canvassing opinions....

need to replace all internal doors- think there are 11.

Currently, the doors are plain and relatively modern and stained a kind of 'ginger' colour to match the pine doorframes, skirting, window sills and window frames. They are what I'd call a medium-dark pine colour. This was done by builders.

It's a modern house but with a 'cottagey' feel as it's in a conservation area.

Now- problem is that new pine doors are unstained so would be quite hard to get them the same colour as the other wood work.

Would white doors look really odd? very unsure what to do.

If you're prepared to wait a little then pine will go a lovely colour by itself... and yes, although I'd always choose white by default in your setting it sounds as though it may look a little odd.

Why do you need to replace all doors?

If house is relatively new you may find that the colour of stain is specified in the owner's hand book type thing so you could use that to match again.

The doors need replacing because they were damaged by the previous owners- they had a cat which has scratched them ( looks like the cat jumped up to unlatch the door handle to access the cat flap!) and the staining has gone all blotchy where they got water on it in the bathrooms, plus we knocked a hole in one accidentally when something fell on it.

The house is relatively new- 25 years old- so not brand new but not a period property.

We have replaced and stained skirting etc where we have had work done- replaced bathrooms etc-but it's a devil of a job and you don't get the perfect math.

I don't think that untreated pine would eventually age to the right colour simply because we do have some natural pine furniture that is old and it's much lighter than the woodwork.

Paint them in a warm neutral colour?

Something like F&B cat's paw ?

Hmmm got me thinking now!
Maybe painted wood....not white but another off white shade.

black doors can look very striking - with chrome handles or white china knobs and touch plates ! not gloss paint- more eggshell works best - but only with white architraves and skirting's.

Yes I'd paint all the woodwork and just oil the doors.

We used Briwax on our internal doors & it's lasted on them really well. There are "colours" in the range so I just did a nearest match to our skirting boards which are a stained oak.
I found the easiest way to apply was to soften the wax first by simply leaving the tin on a radiator for half an hour, then apply with a paint brush & buff off.

I originally did ours 15/16 years ago (we have a self build) & the only ones that have needed repeat applications are the doors leading into the kitchen area.

Noticed this at B &Q a few weeks ago, so might try this next time they need doing
