We are buying a lovely house but with some bright colour schemes that do not really suit us and our things.

We will paint throughout but may not have enough money to change the perfectly nice/serviceable hall stairs and landing carpet (3 floors' worth!) as that would be a major expenditure.

It is a plummy burgundy colour. I wanted to have Cornforth White/Dove Tale type colours in the hall when I thought we had the money to change the carpet. Now it might have to stay, what colour do you think?

We will panel the walls to dado height so I want a colour on the bottom half and an off white on top.

Plum is so not an "us" colour I am struggling to reconcile our colour palette with it.

I am sure it can look lovely just need to broaden my paint horizons...

Thanks

Is it burgundy or plum - they are very different! Plum is much more purple. I think the pale grey would work well if it's more of a plum colour, but burgundy is a much redder and would look good with a warmer butter or sandy toned colour. Pull out any bits and pieces you have in those colours - clothes, art, cushions etc - and stand them around the hall and stairs and see what looks good with the carpet, in natural and artificial light. It saves on buying endless tester pots until you've narrowed down your choices. Also go for something which will be more to your taste when you eventually replace the carpet.
Meanwhile, you're right - it could look very grand and lovely!

We have not bought the house yet so cannot be more specific on the colour, I think more plum but all from memory.

Thanks for the advice!
