Speech and Language Therapy

Dd has asked me to post this question.

She is hoping to apply for a speech and language therapy degree. The entry requirements are quite variable - from AAA to BBB and courses vary in length from 3, to 3.5 to 4 years. All courses have work placements. All give qualified to practice status at the end. Looking at Unistats and some other websites it looks as though all have a very high percentage of graduates in work six months after graduation and all seem to have pretty good student satisfaction ratings. The only difference we can see is the overall league table ranking for the university as a whole - they vary from very high ranking RG type universities to lower ranking ex-poly type universities.

Are there any speech therapists around who might be able to comment on the reasons for the different requirements and course duration. Are the different courses perceived as 'better' or 'worse' once applying for jobs?

Any feedback gratefully received!

Some universities are very research focused and tend to ask for higher entry requirements. They expect a significant proportion of their students to go into research and this is reflected in the content of their lectures/ tutorials/ research projects/dissertations.

Some unis particularly the former polys tend to attract a more diverse type of student often without traditional academic backgrounds/ qualifications and tend to give out lower offers. If your daughter just wants to practise as a speech therapist then either are fine but the more research focused universities mean she also has a better chance of going down the academia route if she chooses to.
