Hi, hoping for some tips, my Stepdaughter has got into UCL to start this September, but has been told she needs to find her own accommodation. We don't know where to start. Would like her to be with first year UCL students, does anyone have any experience of this problem? thanks!

There should be a student support place at her uni and they usually have lists of landlord who accept students. Just call them and ask to be put through.

Have a look at this link on the UCL website
www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/accommodation

All single first-year undergraduates guaranteed a residential place. I would think a uni like UCL will have good student support.

Dorms can be pretty noisy!

The college will help with accommodation - maybe a family stay to start with if she needs that extra bit of support for the first term or so.

Most would be around islington/bloomsbury, which is fab for students.

What's she studying?

Thanks for your replies, UCL have said that as it was her insurance offer, she has nearly no chance of getting halls. Everything we are looking at seems so expensive and a total needle in haystack. If anyone has experience of student lets in London would really appreciate tips!

DS was at UCL until 2yrs ago. It's hard for London students as they are competing against so many in the private rental sector.

I know we looked at Black Katz letting agency in Camden but everything is so expensive.

Or there is the University of London site housing.london.ac.uk/cms/

Once she has found a group of friends it will be much easier to rent next year.

Can't UCL recommend any private landlords? You may need to look at the cheaper but safe areas of London to keep costs down. I studied at Central Saint Martins and had to get the Piccadilly line to college. It is close to UCL. On that line you could look near Holloway Road or Arsenal but make sure you check out the area properly. The bit near Highbury and Islington station is nice. Does UCL have a facebook page for new students? Some do and you can put a message up for other first year students looking to share.

She might be able to go on a waiting list for halls, and get in mid-October.

For private flats, there are lots of estate agents targeting students. Use Google.

Most private lets are in Camden, and students usually get together before taking out a rental.

She probably has to push for more help from the Accomodation office, so that they can point her in the right direction.

The accommodation office are really helpful, I got emergency halls in final year at Pugh house in Swiss cottage (if they still have it)
Otherwise Camden is where most people lived, quite often flat shares are advertised in the student union on Gordon st .
I lived at Langton house too in my first year ah the memories!
Good luck

Years ago, - but I didn't get accommodation for UCL - but after a bit of a wait, did get a room in a University of London collegiate hall.

This one is still advertising places: www.london.ac.uk/halls/eleanor-rosa-house

Met students from all different bits of London university. Worked out quite well.

I'm not usually one to scream ZOMBIE THREAD!!! as some are wont to do whenever someone responds to a thread with a last post more than a fortnight ago - but this thread is actually from ten years ago...
