I have realised today that i need to do something with my life. I am 28 and have been working in the same office for 9 years, although its a stable, comfortable job I am bored out of my brain!!

I have decided today that life is too short and I would love to maybe go back to college or do some sort of training for a brand new career, trouble is i have a mortgage to pay.

Has anyone done this that could advise me where to start and is there such a thing as funded learning, would i qualify for benefits etc.

Would love to hear stories from others who have completely changed direction in their career.

Thank you in anticipation

I'm changing direction too but I'm going through the OU, if your earnings are below a certain level you get help. What kind of job are you thinking about doing?

Hi this is a copy of a recent post i answered, you could try the next step website Its great. In the employment section there are many helpful hints and tips. I started by phoning careers advice as like you was unsure what to do but wanted a better career, perks and future for me and the children. They told me about the website, and if it were not for researching i would have fallen back into the same boring office jobs i actually dont enjoy and get bored of in 2 years. They have a questionaire section which asks about you what you enjoy and many questions you would not have thought relevant. At the end it, it gives you options of job roles which may suit you. And then the clever part is that in another section you can read about all the job roles, what qualifications you need, useful links and how much you can expect to earn. I have just started a btec diploma level 2 in construction as i would like to become a building surveyor eventually. Downside is i have had to start at a level 2 as only have my GCSE's and my level 2 hairdressing but no construction experience. I am 29 and they are all really young!. After one year i will do the level 3 which is another two years and then i can choose my specialist degree (Building surveying) Good luck x I would definately give careers advice a call they are really great at this and can give you the information on exactly where the questionaire section is as i cant remember !
