It's World Book Day on March 7. What inspired (or desperate) costume feats have you pulled off in the past? Post your pictures (old or new) here and on Fri 15 March we'll put all the entries into a pot and pluck one out. The winner will receive £100 worth of books from World Book Day authors.

If you are stuck for ideas visit our World Book Day costume page for some great Mumsnetter suggestions.

This is my little one as Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We love Roald Dahl so it was great fun being able to order the special bars of chocolate off Ebay to add to the costume.

...and this is big brother's How to Train Your Dragon Hiccup costume from last year...

This is DD as Thistle, the fairy from The Dolls House Fairy. I thought I had an easy ride when DD declared that to be her favourite book (fairies are easy, right?), but Thistle, on closer inspection, is not just any fairy hmm - so I ended up making costume from scratch.

2 years later (school only dress up for WBD every 4 years, so this is the last one I did) she has just used the skirt as part of a butterfly costume for a play, which made me feel better.

Crumpets Tue 19-Feb-13 14:57:27

Here is Max, King of the Wild Things. He's going to be very hot on WBD. His godmother made this costume for him.

Not sure if it has to be a costume for world book day, but here's me with DH and DD in a nativity scene. My step-daughter was given a school project to research the nativity and present her findings anyway she liked. Of course she wanted a live action film. What would have been wrong with a few bullet points and a picture?

aristocat Fri 01-Mar-13 00:17:35

This is my two as Harry Potter and Hermione. I made the cloaks - black with a red lining and the magic wands were from twigs.

trinculo Fri 01-Mar-13 09:16:50

Decided he wanted to be a character from the Harry Potter books. 'Easy enough!' thought I. 'Can I be Fawkes the phoenix, please?' Ah... Don't know what JK Rowling would have thought, but DS was very happy with the result.

JenniferHelen Fri 01-Mar-13 13:25:01

My DS was a very excited, animated Pumpkin Boy last October. In fact he wore the hat all day, and had the red ring around his forehead to prove it 24 hours later!

This is my son Cam, he loves knights and books about knights and wanted a costume, I said yes but only if we could keep it under £5. The answer was to make it ourselves and we had great fun together doing it. We used felt, card, foil, foil cupcake cases and a whole load of sequin foil. It cost just under £4 to make. We just need to make a sword and shield now.

donzee8 Sat 02-Mar-13 19:31:40

The tin man from The Wizard of Oz. Cardboard and tin foil!!

NettleTea Mon 04-Mar-13 14:43:27

My son Jack as Max in where the wild things are. I made the outfit myself, and then we re-used it for a 'wild rumpus' birthday party a couple of weeks later.

NettleTea Mon 04-Mar-13 14:45:39

an extra pic of Jack/Max blowing a horn to summon the wild things made from a ferret skin (nice.....) - just shows the tail a bit better! and the mud.....

Ds is one of the 101 dalmations, I spent ages drawing spots on a rather large baby grow.

Dd1 is Dorothy, people kept asking where her ruby slippers were, but in the original book they were actually silver, apparently they changed them to ruby in the film to make the most of the new technicolor film process.

BadRoly Thu 07-Mar-13 12:56:49

Dd2 is Mildred Hubble - The Worst Witch

Dd2 as The Gruffalo's Child, about 2 minutes after this photo was taken I realised my mistake of leaving the facepaints within reach, I returned to find she'd painted her entire face green.

Dobby the House Elf - Harry Potter.
1 x badge covered tea-cosy (I have a cold teapot now!) with attached ears made from covered sponge. 1 x tea-stained pillow case, odd socks and shoes, dad's old tie and a book with an odd sock in it.

DS and his best mate as Things 1 and 2 - a horribly appropriate costume as they really do the opposite to what you tell them.

aaaaagh Fri 08-Mar-13 09:39:47

Kili the dwarf from the Hobbit - my bearded DTD1 in my old leather coat with the lower part of the sleeves cut off and turned into leather cuffs - the bottom of the coat chopped off to make the sword belt and then fur trim added and several tunics!

DD took the literal response to her World Book Day costume and went as an actual book!

pilky2006 Mon 11-Mar-13 11:22:56

This is ds dressed as Noddy. He normally doesn't like dressing up but we came up with this outfit so it would be easy for him to wear all day at school. Just used his own shorts and t-shirt, made a simple hat out of some spare material and attached a plastic christmas bauble at the end and then used a duster for his scarf. I tied a knot in the scarf and then sewed a press stud where the knot was then he could take it off easily during the day. He ended up really enjoying dressing up.

sjonlegs Mon 11-Mar-13 17:22:13

This is my son Archie (aged 9 with special needs) ... we were struggling as they only told us the day before that they were dressing up ... but a last minute root around and 10 minutes of making up and my little soldier became Dracula!!
