Warning, this may make you spew...

Okay, this is the fourth one of these things i've seen this week.

Every window in the house has been left opened 24/7 the past fortnight because of the heat, so I'm worried this has caused some sort of infestation.

I've tried Googling what it is, but to no avail.

The closest thing i can find is a flea. I've never seen a real life flea before but assumed they were tiny. This thing in my picture was about about the size of the nail on my little finger.

I have two kittens who have both received 2 deflea vaccinations in the past three months. They went for a check up two weeks ago and were clear.

Any ideas?

Please excuse the bits of mould around it... My window sill is unfortunately a hot spot for dampness.

I have to bump do I can find this outside the app and look. Back in a mo!

That's no way a flea. I don't know what it is though. How many (approximately) do you have?

quoteunquote Fri 26-Jul-13 10:05:32

ask here

but it is harmless, don't worry.

Rooners Fri 26-Jul-13 10:06:18

only four? that's only twice as many as your kittens grin

Hardly an infestation! please don't panic. It looks like a fly or beetle of some sort. It's summer, it's normal.

Oh, that's a relief anyway. Don't think i'd cope if it was the beginning of a flea infestation.

Not too many. I've maybe been seeing one per day since Monday. Could be the rain making them come through the window?

I'm worried they'll lay eggs or something and then I'll end up with hundreds. beastie-phobe

Great link, thank you. grin

CaptainJamesTKirk Fri 26-Jul-13 10:09:31

Have you looked here? We've had all kinds on bugs in our house recently because we have the windows open 24-7. It looks familiar...

pictish Fri 26-Jul-13 10:10:15

You've seen four and reckon you've got an infestation!! hmm grin

Our house is surrounded by trees, and we get all sorts of mini beasts in the house. So many varieties I can't keep up with them all.

Stop worrying about it!

Rooners Fri 26-Jul-13 10:11:09

I do understand I think

I want a kitten infestation now. <grump>

pictish Fri 26-Jul-13 10:14:32

We do have a guide to insects, so we can look the more interesting ones up. Sometimes we even photograph them.
I would barely notice your little critter.

Found this moth in the kitchen wall yesterday for example....quite lovely!

curlew Fri 26-Jul-13 10:18:30

I wish fleas were that big- they'd be so much easier to deal with!

Mind you, I think head lice should be genetically modified to make them florescent.......

As an aside why would a half inch long beetle make anyone spew?

pictish Fri 26-Jul-13 10:24:53

It's almost certainly a variety of beetle.

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin Fri 26-Jul-13 10:28:02

I've just posted a thread on quote's link so hopefully someone will identify it soon.

Ugh, my skin is crawling. blush

Pictish - that's rather lovely. I don't think i'd be quite as squeamish if that was in my bathroom instead of this giant flea monstrosity. Just in case anyone's as much of a wimp as me, Curlew. I know i'd have almost spewed if i entered this thread and saw that picture first thing. It's the eyes that freak me out most. Argh.

MeeWhoo Fri 26-Jul-13 10:33:11

Looks like a cockroach to me....

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin Fri 26-Jul-13 10:34:11

What!!!! shock

Ok, I'm moving.

MeeWhoo Fri 26-Jul-13 10:36:40

Mind you, i am not an expert, but the long antennae and the big back legs do look cockroachy. I'd suggest a google image search but I don't want you to faint...

3littlefrogs Fri 26-Jul-13 10:41:36

It doesn't look like a cockroach.

How big is it?

3littlefrogs Fri 26-Jul-13 10:42:27

Also nothing remotely like a flea!

It's not a roach, they have a different shaped thorax. I trod on one once in a youth hostel and it was way bigger than a finger nail. Lovely experience that.

Fleas are very springy looking, and teeny tiny. The last holiday cottage I stayed in had an infestation.

I'm very unenthusiastic about holidays now!

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin Fri 26-Jul-13 10:48:39

Even more relieved it's not a roach than i was to discover it wasn't a flea!. Thank you, thank you. unpacks suitcase

It's about 1cm long, 3littlefrogs. Not any smaller. It's really bugging (blush) me not knowing.

There are plenty of different varieties of cockroach, some fly.

But that doesn't look like any roach I've ever seen. The colours on its back and legs are all mottled.

I really doubt it's dangerous, anyway.

It looks like a timberman - maybe a female one, as their antennae are not so bonkers long.

could be a longhorn beetle, or a Capricorn beetle, but more possible is a musk beetle.

Oops, sorry, not musk, they're too big.
