40 bags in 40 days...anyone doing this or want to join me?

I read about this a few days ago and should have started on Wednesday but the children have been off all week and it's pointless trying to sort anything out while they're here (only one DS of my own but look after several others).

Today, my goal is to fill a minimum of 4 bags and get them out of the house.

Anyone want to join me?

McPheetStink Sat 16-Feb-13 09:03:14

I'm doing that today anyway.

We're off to sell Dds baby stuff sad

Sadly the cash is much needed.

madasa Sat 16-Feb-13 09:35:54

Can they be sandwich bags? hopeless declutterer

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 16-Feb-13 09:39:34

McPheet - I hope you raise lots of cash smile

Madasa - hmm, don't give me ideas grin. I'm going to start with carrier bags and may move on to black bags if I'm going well.

SlatternismyMiddlename Sat 16-Feb-13 13:02:30

I'm all for decluttering - but don't forget that they are bringing in a bag tax so you might need to hold onto those plastic bags!

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 16-Feb-13 13:24:44

I'm in Wales and have had to pay for carrier bags for a couple of years so am quite careful about letting them go blushgrin. However, I think this is a good enough reason to splash out grin...especially as the ones we pay for in the supermarket are crap quality and not good for anything much at all hmm.

Meglet Sat 16-Feb-13 19:18:29

I'm in (and believe me I never usually venture into GH threads blush).

Todays bag was foil for recycling. We might go to the tip tomorrow, got some tatty old cushions for the rag bag.

Loughrigg Sat 16-Feb-13 19:21:44

I'll join you. Filled 4 bags yesterday.

whats this then? sounds like my sort of thing, I hate stuff, unfortunatly the rest of my family seem quite attached to it.

I'm in. Got various bags of clothes to sort for charity/rags/keep, will encourage me to get them out of the house. We need the room or DS won't have anywhere to crawl!

Two bags of assorted rubbish from clearing out bedroom today, 38 to go...

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 16-Feb-13 20:09:17

Welcome, everyone! Glad to have some company smile

Meglet - me neither but desperate times call for desperate measures grin

Loughrigg - well done! I'm still getting myself ready to start and today is nearly finished blush

Dita - fill a bag a day for 40 days with things for the charity shop/recycling/rubbish. I suggested it to DS and he didn't look impressed so will have to start on my own clutter stuff then hope it encourages him to join me.

Smudging - thanks for the encouragement! Sounds like it's worked well for you...I hope it has similar results on this house.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 16-Feb-13 20:10:32

Slightly - sorry, I type so slowly! Welcome and well done on your great start!!

EntWife Sat 16-Feb-13 20:20:18

Ooooh! Can I join? We have oodles of crap in desperate need of rehoming.

Can I start on Monday?

Meglet Sun 17-Feb-13 14:22:07

Todays haul. 1 bag of rubbish from the car blush. Although I now also have a bag of car clutter to sort through in the house, think it's mostly cd's so it can be tidied away.

1 bag of rags for the tip and 1 bag of old toys for the charity shop, now waiting in the car and will be dropped off this week.

16 bags of recycling and tip stuff taken smile very happy me.

Meglet Mon 18-Feb-13 18:38:26

I could only manage the glass recycling today.

slightlysoupstained Wed 20-Feb-13 00:14:22

Hmm, not doing so well at keeping this up here! Got stack of clothes to go to charity waiting, but not actually got around to taking it. Won't have chance tomorrow so will be aiming for 4 bags on Thursday.

AdoraBell Wed 20-Feb-13 00:57:57

I'm in, although my DDs have another couple of weeks of holiday (southern hemisphere), tomorrow I can do the glass recycling, and DD2's clothes.

AdoraBell Wed 20-Feb-13 01:05:58

in fact I'm going to clear the glass from the kitchen before I go to bedgrin

AdoraBell Wed 20-Feb-13 22:13:26

Clothes sorted out, will drop them off next time I go into town, along with the glass jars and bottles. Our recycling isn't collected here.

slightlysoupstained Thu 21-Feb-13 19:03:20

Okay, five bags of clothes/shoes recycled. That makes me 7 down, 33 to go. Not sure what to tackle tomorrow. Maybe I should get DP on the case.

Mind you, having dropped off recycling have now popped in to Ikea. Oops. Am only getting stuff to organise clutter in cupboards better though.

How's everyone else doing? Dita - well impressed with 16 bags!

AdoraBell Thu 21-Feb-13 22:06:05

Today we went out, so nothing decluttered yet. I'll tackle my wardrobe after dinner.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons Thu 21-Feb-13 22:27:10

Ooh didn't realise there was a thread about this! <excited> <easily pleased> We've been doing this. Managed 11 bags in the first 3 days but ground to a bit of a holt now, so this is just the motivation I need. grin

AdoraBell Fri 22-Feb-13 16:50:14

Wardrobe will be finished today, just pulled out a few things list night, some of my no-longer-needed things are in the ironing pile, no point ironing stuff I'm getting rid of.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 23-Feb-13 17:33:08

I am so crap...I've been lurking on my own thread blush.

So far, I have cleared a grand total of zero bags!

However, I have spent the last hour and a half in my bedroom and now have a bag of rubbish, two bags and a bean bag for the charity shop, 1 bag of rags (where's best to get rid of these?) and a bag to give to my sister!

I have one more hour to get things sorted before stopping for the evening. Also, most of my wardrobe is now in folded piles on my bed so I need to put it all away before I finish otherwise it'll all be on the floor again when I go up to bed.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 23-Feb-13 18:30:58

Hmm, not quite sure why it takes me so long to achieve one small thing but my room is still a total tip sad.

I have changed DS' bedding though so that's a bonus grin.

Think I might have to spend another hour up there after dinner. Hopefully, I'll be able to fill another bag or two.

recall Sat 23-Feb-13 18:37:34

I am going to do it different.

will completely empty each cupboard/drawer. tip it into box. tip box onto sorting table.divide into different sorting bags.

I plan to use our dining room and keep going until whole house is de cluttered room by room. Then one trip to tip, charity shop, wood burner.

very excited !!!

Meglet Sat 23-Feb-13 18:55:56

2 bags today. One was actually a bags worth of kids toys that I sold via Facebay (£8 up + kerching!).

And a bag of random crap from the toy boxes, mainly tatty books and art + craft pictures to treasure tat that was just being squashed.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 23-Feb-13 19:04:26

Recall - when I do that, I find I get bored halfway through then everything just gets shoved back into cupboards/drawers blush

Meglet - well done!

recall Sun 24-Feb-13 01:38:58

hiccup well....even worse, never started sad lost interest, had a bit of a row with husband and can't be bothered now, lost all enthusiasm.

Meglet Sun 24-Feb-13 09:49:29

hiccup we started reading a HTTYD book this week, last week I wouldn't of had a clue what your name meant!

recall I'm going to do my cupboards now. Get it all out on the dining table and organise it before it goes back. There will be shouting as I'm sure the dc's will try and 'help' but I need my kitchen in order again!

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sun 24-Feb-13 09:58:51

Recall - sad oh dear! Can I recommend a strong coffee, piece of cake toast then half an hour of sorting?

Meglet - I Ds loves the books. There are quite a few of them aswell ... I think about 10 or 12. Have you seen the film? As usual, the books are much better. The film changed a couple of major details which ruined it for me! <realises they're a children's series blush>

We're off out in an hour so once I've got dressed, I'm going to put all the rubbish out...including 4 empty cardboard boxes that I was keeping, just incase blush. I'm such a hoarder!

Muppeeeto Sun 24-Feb-13 10:02:01

Right, the past 2 days have been unsuccessful, so today is the day!
Kitchen corner cupboard + children's toys + children's clothes .....

Will report back when finished.

Muppeeeto Sun 24-Feb-13 10:03:00

Ooops, have name changed from before

I'm a late joiner, but I'm trying to remove some of the crap items we have amassed in the past few years.

Yesterday DS1 and I got rid of a bin bag of teddies (charity), and some old socks for recycling.

Today I sorted my birthday candles/banners etc and boxed the ones for keeping, binning the old rubbishy bits and we have two bags full of old games from the play room so two ( out of four) shelves are decluttered.

Oh and i also got rid of 50% of our glasses, they were taking up too much space and we didn't use them, so they have to go somewhere....

Startail Sun 24-Feb-13 13:05:48

Lots of clothes to charity shop, done.

How to get DH to chuck 40 tons of magazines is the question?

sunnyshine Sun 24-Feb-13 16:02:38

So saw this thread this morning and am on bin bag number 4 already! Just persuaded my dd we should do her room and she was impressively ruthless!! However she's bored now and I'm left to tidy it up!

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sun 24-Feb-13 16:59:15

Well done, everyone!

I just gave my friend 8 Nutella glasses blush that were heading for the charity shop...I wonder if that counts as a bag as I did give them to her in a bag grin!!

Also, just sold a buggy via eBay which has made a lovely space by the front door until Tuesday when its replacement arrives!!

Going to list a few things on eBay in the hope that I'll clear some more space in the next week.

sunnyshine Sun 24-Feb-13 19:35:36

Added 2 more to today's total! Off to sort out my understairs cupboard now!! Eeek!!

isw Sun 24-Feb-13 20:47:07

Ok, I am in. 1 extra bag of rubbish out in the wheelie tonight, done smile

Not quite sure how I am going to fit this in, got 3 family birthdays this week and a weeks holiday after that... But there is always some excuse!

sunnyshine Sun 24-Feb-13 22:43:44

2 more from understairs cupboard that's 7 today!!!

JengaBlock Sun 24-Feb-13 22:54:29

Can I start tomorrow please? Really want to do this!

AdoraBell Mon 25-Feb-13 03:21:47

Found more things in my wardrobe that can gogrin

stormforce10 Mon 25-Feb-13 17:04:40

Please can I join? I seriously need to declutter but I'm rubbish at it. I desperately need support, managable targets and motivation and this seems perfect. If I have to come and report here every day for 40 days it will force me to get on with it. I'll start tomorrow with a bag of CDs for the charity shop

<waves to everyone> smile

I got rid of a bag full of rubbish from my utility cupboards and a bag and a half from the cupboards under the sink. DH fixed the leak under the sink and we got rid of the shelf in the cupboard so there's less room for all the rubbish that was in there before.

I'm impressed with my achievements so far, I'm trying to be ruthless

Meglet Mon 25-Feb-13 18:44:41

I've not cleared a whole bag out today (unless you count a changing mat) but I'm continually adding to the school charity clothes bag pile which is being collected this week and my car boot pile (in loft).

I have over 3 big blue ikea bags for car-booting, so that'll up my total when they finally go grin.

That all counts IMO Meglet especially any dirty nappies, they are bagged after all wink

BigPigLittlePig Mon 25-Feb-13 20:54:30

<waves across bombsite that is my house>

I moved house in November. DD rocked up 5 weeks early, 5 days after we moved. I need to sort my house life out. Over the past few weeks, have got rid of 1 box of cds/dvds to music magpie, several binbags of rubbish, and have an ever-growing pile of clothes/stuff for car booting/charity shops once the weather is better.

Reckon 40 bags in 40 days is do-able, especially if we're counting napppies grin

recall Mon 25-Feb-13 22:08:28

Ive done a whole room !!! Totally emptied a floor to ceiling cupboard thing, and also a sideboard that was very nasty. I have my processing room in full swing, a bag for charity shop, one for CD's & DVDs, E bay, Kids Crafts, Toys. Got rid of two bin liners of just rubbish shock

recall Mon 25-Feb-13 22:11:34

I empty a drawer/cupboard completely into a box, and take it into the processing room. Once I have finished the whole house, I will the empty the processing room back into the empty house.....so exciting ! Its great cos I can just do a little shelf if I have a spare 1/2 hour, or I can do a whole room.

stormforce10 Mon 25-Feb-13 22:37:01

I've started. I went through the cupboard under the stairs and filled a bag for life with stuff I simply don't need and is effectively rubbish. Its gone out for the collection tomorrow. I don't think its made much difference though so will aim to remove another bag from there tomorrow.

One bag down. 39 to go.

Suddenly realised I can sell my cd's - need every penny to damp proof and replace the kitchen so will spend some time tomorrow racking up the pittance that Money magpie will give me - it all helps smile

newbiefrugalgal Mon 25-Feb-13 22:45:59

Can I join??
Serious need to sort out and declutter my home.

takeaway2 Mon 25-Feb-13 22:58:41

Can I join? Will not achieve 40/40 but can do some. I work ft but have lots of clutter. DS turned 5 last week snd received more presents! Hoping to sneak some away to re gift!!

Did give 2 bags of clothes away to friends today and a bag yesterday. So that's 3! Plus filling up a charity bag. And another one for someone else.

I have a question. What or how do you guys with kids do this? I have random pieces of jigsaw, toys, parts of things which I used up faithfully put back in right boxes, trays, matched up etc. when I had one kid. But then I had 2... And I am outnumbered even though there's dh. In between working and house stuff, I can no longer remember to always bring jigsaw back down or dolly back in box. I therefore have things here, there and everywhere.

Do you just tackle everything at the same time or do you set up new boxes/trays and label them as stationery, dolls, Lego, puzzles, octonauts and so on? Help.

BigPigLittlePig Tue 26-Feb-13 10:48:07

takeaway dsd has a storage unit in her room with 3 drawers in - one for barbies and their assorted crap, one for dolls clothes and one for "stuff" (think cheap plastic freebies, pocket money toys, party bag bits). She has 2 underbed pull-out things - one for dolls, one for teddies. Puzzles/games in the bottom of the wardrobe. anything more challenging would not work.

I would gather together all their things scattered around, and dump them in their room. Get them to pick out at least 10 toys they don't play with anymore to get rid of.

stormforce10 Tue 26-Feb-13 12:08:59

I have nearly filled one big blue ikea bag with stuff for charity and one black bin bag with stuff for the bin. The cupboard under the stairs and my bits and bobs cupobard in the sitting room looking slightly tidier. Going to clear out a basket full of "stuff" now then dd's pen and pencil box. I am sure that there are many that have run out and can be chucked out.

stormforce10 Tue 26-Feb-13 13:40:08

Yipee blue ikea bag filled to over flowing AND taken to charity shop. 2 down 38 to go!!!

takeaway2 Tue 26-Feb-13 20:02:47

Thanks bigpig. It's hideous trying to match things up. At the moment I have a puzzle with two missing parts, I also have toy fruit everywhere when actually they need to be with the toy kitchen ... But I really can't be going up and down trying to bring things here there and everywhere. I will endeavor the next time I have a moment - which will be in 3 weekends time. (Away this weekend, in London next weekend for work...). hmm

BigPigLittlePig Tue 26-Feb-13 20:49:06

Good day today - 2 binbags of rubbish blush, 1 bag of toys for car boot/charity shop. So 5 binbags of rubbish in total, about 3 of clothes and 1 of toys. Not doing too badly at all!

I didn't manage to declutter anything today, but we did freecycle our kitchen table and chairs and they've gone to a loving home, so I have lost a dumping ground and gained a huge space. smile

stormforce10 Wed 27-Feb-13 13:47:57

I have now filled the black sack and its tied up ready to go out with next weeks rubbish. Still in the house so cant count it yet.

I've put my maternity clothes on free cycle and Im hoping someone will decide to come and pick them up. They don't really make more than a carrier bag so ot sure if can count them

I've half filled another ikea bag for the charity shop

I've put the pram carry cot in the loft as ds no longer fits in it and it takes up quite a bit of space but do not want to get rid of it as was expensive and my sister is hoping to have a baby in next couple of years.

Tomorrow I will sort through my wardrobe with a view to filling up the ikea bag.

So no bags out today but hopefully a few on their way

sunnyshine Wed 27-Feb-13 19:19:45

2 more bin bags out! No one has missed anything yet grin and I bought 2 x 80 litre boxes to organise the loft!

stormforce10 Wed 27-Feb-13 20:28:38

couldn't stand it. I emptied the half full ikea bag into a smaller bag and took it to Oxfam so that's 2 1/2 bags done.

dd has been through her toy cupboard and sorted out a box full of stuff that she wants to sale to make money for the local children's hospital. We're not really in the right sort of place for a yard sale and I din't have a car so car boot sale would be difficult. Anyone got any ideas on how we can do this please. I'm quite happy to add a pile for stuff to hers. I could use the money but I think I should encourage her if she wants to help a charity.

stormforce10 Thu 28-Feb-13 12:53:09

Nearly filled another ikea bag with my clothes. I can close my drawers without having to sqash stuff down and found some lovely tops I'd forgotten about smile

Someone has asked for my maternity clothes - just waiting to hear when they want to pick them up otherwise they too are off to the charity shop.

I've sorted out half a dozen pairs of old shoes belonging to DP and 3 belonging to me that are beyond keeping let alone wearing and I'm going to take them off to the shoe bank tomorrow.

Half filled another bin bag.

Also chosen 10 books to take to charity shop. i hate getting rid of books but we have so many.

Stopping now. Had next to no sleep last night thanks to DS teething and all this activity is exhausting me

BigPigLittlePig Thu 28-Feb-13 13:32:52

Another 2 bags of rubbish today - 11/40 so far.
Beginning to think my house must just be full of shit.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Thu 28-Feb-13 21:09:07

Right, I am so far behind, it's embarrassing blush.

I'm not even sure how many bags I should have filled by now...I think it's 15.

I have an unexpected morning off tomorrow so am wondering how much I can realistically do in 2 hours before I start work at 11...surely, I could get 10 bags out of the house. There are still three upstairs that haven't made it out of the door yet so am going to be cheeky and add them to my 10 grin

This sort of thing often happens to me...I start a support thread and end up disappearing off the face of the earth blushgrin...it happened a couple of times when I started an eBay challenge thread and also when I started a weight loss thread. I must not start any more support threads. Fact!

AdoraBell Fri 01-Mar-13 02:35:40

Okay, not much moré actually decluttered, but the clothes have been taken into town To the recycling place. Tomorrow I shall start on DD1's room.

DesiderataHollow Fri 01-Mar-13 12:54:08

Late to the party..... but one whole room emptied that was three foot deep with an invisible floor! Too many bags to count, one ikea bag of ebay-ables and a couple of large metal items left out for the scrap man. grin

Now of course, we have t work out how to replace the rotten window, and replaster the back wall. With no money.

stormforce10 Fri 01-Mar-13 14:42:37

Day 5 and nothing out of the house BUT I've filled 2 black bags with rubbish ready to go out on collection day and added them to the one I did yesterday. I've filled a big aldi bag (the sort you pay 80p for at the till) and completed filling the ikea bag. I've also put a big rug and a brief case on the charity shop pile.

So still at 2 1/2 bags gone but have another 5 bags ready to go.

I've also found 2 mini boden dresses and a baby bjorn carrier to list on ebay..

Current tally

1 bag rubbish gone
3 bags rubbish waiting to go
1 1/2 bags to charity shop
1 small bag maternity clothes waiting for freecycler to pick up
2 bags to go to charity shop
1 box of toys for charity shop

The house is starting to feel very slightly tidier smile

AdoraBell Sat 02-Mar-13 02:19:37

Make that tomorrow for DD1's roomblush we we're all day. I did, however find £30 in an enevelope whilst sorting my junk cupboard in the kitchengrin

stormforce10 Sat 02-Mar-13 11:01:33

Just tidied the accumalated junk from the bottom of DD's wardrobe. Quarter black sack of rubbish, half an ikea bag of charity stuff and a few things put away properly. All that's left in the bottom of her wardrobe are her school shoes, her slippers and a paid of boots. Next under her bed (she has a cabin bed this could take some time)

starfishmummy Sat 02-Mar-13 17:06:06

Just starting. I have one an a half bags of clothes ready to go to the school money for clothes collection next week. Hopefully I will have time to sort some more out before it goes.
Also half a very large bin bag of rubbish sorted.
I also need to clear out a food cupboard this week - there's a load of ancient stuff in there that Dh has bought and never used, (stuff only he likes)

hugoagogo Sun 03-Mar-13 19:07:25

Is it too late too start?

I have cleared a box of dvds-to the charity shop today.

It's a start.

Does anyone know what to do with recordable video tapes?

stormforce10 Sun 03-Mar-13 19:56:36

Not really done much today but have managed to freecycle the baby swing which ds had grown out of and was taking a lot of floor space. Maternity clothes have gone too smile

BigPigLittlePig Mon 04-Mar-13 11:43:02

No further on as we went away for the weekend. Am hopinh dd naps this afternoon so I can tackle the kitchen...

stormforce10 Mon 04-Mar-13 23:26:33

latest tally

5 1/2 bags rubbish gone
1 1/2 bags to charity shop
1 box toys for charity shop
3 bags for charity
1 bag dds school uniform for school shop
1 bag shoes for recycling
baby swing and maternity clothes free cycled

house still a tip shock

issimma Tue 05-Mar-13 15:05:19

Can I join? Am v keen declutterer, and hate 'stuff'. Will aim for 30 bags this March, excluding putting the bins out.
Today: 2 carriers of clothes freecycled. 28 to go.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous Sat 09-Mar-13 08:24:49

Issimma - welcome!

Right, I am up early(ish) and ready to get some bags filled!

I still have the bags I filled from last week to take to the charity shop so will put them straight in the car and go and fill some more!

Meglet Wed 03-Apr-13 19:03:48

Just popping back.

I have cleared out quite a lot of stuff but I'm stuck waiting for car boot season now. Got several big blue Ikea bags of kids stuff in my loft and mums spare room waiting for the sun to shine.

So once I can do a car boot sale I can clear everything.

AdoraBell Thu 04-Apr-13 16:19:29

I have a confessionblush I defected to the Minimalist Quiche <runs>

Have shifted loads of clutter but couldn't fit in around the 40 bags/40 days theme.
