Tip of the day

Don't get in a panic over Christmas. Keep a box and put a little in it every week - small gifts, wine, nibbles, napkins etc. This way, you'll be more relaxed and less skint in December! keriku

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

I have already bought a MIELE, I was just updating an ancient thread, ladies.

<hopes that Miele will send a free dishwasher for all the free advertising... oh, don't Miele do Nespresso machines?>
lol

Should have got a Hetty anyway. dh spends VERY little time with him...
ROFL at Henry being another male in house grin

Sorry you have made me spit tea on keyboard grin

SEBO for me every time. How I love that hoover.......
We all talk to him like he is a real little person hmm

The girls wanted me to get a Hetty but I thought dh would prefer the male company (4 dds in this house)
LOL at the happy little face grin

My 15mth old DD loves opening the airing cupboard and waving at it!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Henry.

And he has such a happy little face I talk to him while I pull him around the house.

<weirdo emoticon>
Another vote for a Henry here.

Although we got a Hetty <pink version> as it was cheaper.

But it is fab smile

Just noticed that this thread is linked to the Miele website. Thought I should mention that I did indeed buy a Miele and it is fab.

I have all hardwood floors, with some quite large gaps between the parquet pieces (parquet is 80 years old). I LOVE my Dyson All Floors - it has sucked up all the crap that wasn't shifting with my old Miele.

Mrs Lindt - hope you are enjoying Switzerland. I grew up there and loved it - a fantastic place for children. Where are you living?

lol Gipfeli, I am starting to get like that after 6 weeks

Put it this way, I could get a Miele both floors of the house for the price of the Sebo.

I have a Bosch something (BX3 maybe) and it's CRAP! I was surprised, as I've liked Bosch stuff in the past, but this machine is seriously useless!

Miele or Meile or Meile.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 12:20:39
Yes, well I thought it seemed a lot but have no idea what the going price for a hoover is really. I may also have been in CH too long and lost touch with what are reasonable prices for things. smile

Gipfeli
Thanks, but it cost over 700chf shock. I don't use it enough to justify that amount of money.

Found a good deal on a Miele, will just have to hide it from DH as he knows what they cost

Have been through 2 Dysons in 6 years - would never buy another. Have just bought a Cat and Dog Miele and it's fab!

This one is really really good at picking up, easy and quick to get in/out hose, everything really :

I think you can get a Sebo in CH, try here, but it's not a common brand. Miele is of course. We have a Miele which has been going fine for about 13 years, although ours also does not suffer from overwork grin

I also want a Roomba but as you say, they are stupidly expensive here.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 11:29:14
Miele definitely - my last one lasted more than 15 years - my mom bought it and gave it to us when they moved to the USA.

My new(er) Miele is still going strong after about 5 years and I love it. We have a dog that sheds loads and it can cope fine.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 11:23:33
Hmm, after a quick google, I was impressed by the Sebo, if it good enough for Michelle Obama then it is good enough for me.

But, they don't seem to sell them here

So it looks like a Miele then. Do you think that one of the less expensive ones should be ok for our wooden floor, no pet household?
Another vote for SEBO here-bloody fantastic-pulls you along behind it grin
is roomba a robot like the irobot?

I try not to suck up spiders because I rather like them. They eat flies and mozzies after all. I have sucked up moths though (in my mum's old cleaner), only to have them staggering back out the hose a while later looking dishevelled, dusty and strangely reminisent of Michael Jackson's Thriller video.

Miele too after too many years with a completely bloody useless Dyson. We have the Dog and Cat which is great. We have a visiting dog and mostly carpet. A cheaper model by the same brand may be better suited for hard floors, especially if you don't have animals. Can't fault ours actually.

I really want a Roomba, but they are soooooo expensive here, I am waiting till we go over to UK next time.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 10:23:52
I can't believe no one's mentioned the Roomba. I haven't got one as I have different levels, but there are threads raving about them.

The old one was a cheapy one, my SIL got one at the same time and it lasted about 6 weeks. I think it was a combination of luck and slatternly housekeeping that kept ours going so long.

I have got a cylinder dyson. Our first one is still going after 12 years DH uses it for the car.

We won one a new one about 4 years ago and I have never had a minutes bother with either of them.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 10:00:33
Blimey if it lasted 15 years, I'd buy the same model.

Failing that, Henry is brilliant.
Couldn't you just put them outside?

I'm not overkeen on them, especially the big ones with boots on but I'd never kill a spider.

I once hoovered a slug up by accident and was horrified shock. I cut open the hoover bag to look for it - have no idea what I thought I could do with it. Give it a bath perhaps? - but the bag was almost full and it had dissappeared into the dust and dirt sad. And I hate slugs.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 09:56:10
If I have inadvertantly offended any spiderlovers then I apologise, but I hate the buggers and the big ones get hoovered.

Does no one else do this?
'I always leave the hoover on for half an hour to make sure they are really dead' hmm

I don't hink I've ever hoovered up a spider.
Henrys are great, so good, all the cleaners use them for a reason. Powerful, simple, does job. I've got one and better than Miele and Dyson imo.

Love the idea of an irobot though - does anyone have one?
I've had a Henrys for the last 20 years and had no problems at all. They are great.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 09:07:52
Hmm, Miele of Seba seem to be in the running. Never heard of Seba, wonder if I can get them here.

I prefer bags tbh, I hate emptying the hoover and seeing all the dead spiders. <<shudder>>

Do spiders die when you hoover them up or can they crawl back out? I always leave the hoover on for half an hour to make sure they are really dead.

Another vote for Miele

I wouldn't get another Dyson. Ours has blown up twice! They came to repair it for free, but I still wouldn't bother again - they are very heavy and very temperamental. When it works, it's fantastic - but it spends a lot of time not working because some little tube somewhere has been dislodged in the process of heaving the thing around. My cleaner swears by Henrys, fwiw!

I have a miele after three dysons and I love it, I payed £120 for it when it came second in the which report, miele also cam e first but more expensive model.
I have a Miele Cat and Dog, bought it about 7 months ago. It was expensive for what I would spend on a vacuum but I was sick of buying cheap ones that lasted a year so thought it was worth the experiment. Of course you need bags, but I vacuum every day and get though about 1 bag every 12 weeks or so, and am now using non-miele bags which are cheaper.

It is lovely, the attachments are excellent and the I love the turbo brush. I had a Vax with turbo brush before this and it was the biggest pile of poo ever.

We have a Miele cat and dog and I love it. Sorry, have no idea how much they all cost recently.

We had a Dyson before that that I also loved - no need to buy bags and easy to empty.I like to see the dirt/marbles I've collected..

You have to buy bags with the Miele, they are sometimes on offer when bulk buying but they are goooood bags.

I have recently bought a new hoover and couldn't decide between a miele and a sebo. In the end I bought the sebo which had the same features as a miele, a 5 year guarantee instead of 2 and was slightly cheaper. I think that the miele's are a nicer design though and if I'd been in a more extravagent mood would have bought the miele instead. New sebo is great and has picked up an embarassingly huge amount of dirt and fluff after it's first couple of outings. Both sebo and miele have bags which are expensive and I find a pain after having a bagless one for several years.
I got this a few weeks ago. I am in love. Completely and utterly in love.

definitely, first one lasted 12 years and really i killed it with too much diy. i got another just the same.

the hinges on the accessory door snapped on both but there is a very strong fastening and spring so it is just a removable flap now, not really a problem. it is very easy to use and 3yo is able to do a bit of hoovering too.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 08:52:50
We got a sebo and it is def worth it. Very good suction, light weight and svelt and has lasted ages despite us using it to hoover up builders' rubble for 6 months blush.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 08:50:19
I used a dyson when I worked in a shop and I hated it.

I was looking at the Miele, but they are really expensive. Are they really worth it?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 11-Nov-08 08:44:43
i have a dyson all floors and it's got lots of fab gadgets but I would NOT buy again - it's very heavy, and I should have got a cylinder not an upright as my rooms are a bit cluttered nowadays.

We got our cheapy vacuum cleaner from DH's aunt when we moved into our new flat. I has lasted an amazing 15 years, although it was not overworked as I am not a überhausfrau.

The choice of vacuums is a bit overwhelming, we have hardwood floors, no carpets. Any recommendations?
