We got our cheapy vacuum cleaner from DH's aunt when we moved into our new flat. I has lasted an amazing 15 years, although it was not overworked as I am not a überhausfrau.
The choice of vacuums is a bit overwhelming, we have hardwood floors, no carpets. Any recommendations?

i have a dyson all floors and it's got lots of fab gadgets but I would NOT buy again - it's very heavy, and I should have got a cylinder not an upright as my rooms are a bit cluttered nowadays.

I used a dyson when I worked in a shop and I hated it.
I was looking at the Miele, but they are really expensive. Are they really worth it?

We got a sebo and it is def worth it. Very good suction, light weight and svelt and has lasted ages despite us using it to hoover up builders' rubble for 6 months

definitely, first one lasted 12 years and really i killed it with too much diy. i got another just the same.
the hinges on the accessory door snapped on both but there is a very strong fastening and spring so it is just a removable flap now, not really a problem. it is very easy to use and 3yo is able to do a bit of hoovering too.
I got this a few weeks ago. I am in love. Completely and utterly in love.

I have recently bought a new hoover and couldn't decide between a miele and a sebo. In the end I bought the sebo which had the same features as a miele, a 5 year guarantee instead of 2 and was slightly cheaper. I think that the miele's are a nicer design though and if I'd been in a more extravagent mood would have bought the miele instead. New sebo is great and has picked up an embarassingly huge amount of dirt and fluff after it's first couple of outings. Both sebo and miele have bags which are expensive and I find a pain after having a bagless one for several years.

We have a Miele cat and dog and I love it. Sorry, have no idea how much they all cost recently.
We had a Dyson before that that I also loved - no need to buy bags and easy to empty.I like to see the dirt/marbles I've collected..
You have to buy bags with the Miele, they are sometimes on offer when bulk buying but they are goooood bags.
I have a Miele Cat and Dog, bought it about 7 months ago. It was expensive for what I would spend on a vacuum but I was sick of buying cheap ones that lasted a year so thought it was worth the experiment. Of course you need bags, but I vacuum every day and get though about 1 bag every 12 weeks or so, and am now using non-miele bags which are cheaper.
It is lovely, the attachments are excellent and the I love the turbo brush. I had a Vax with turbo brush before this and it was the biggest pile of poo ever.

I wouldn't get another Dyson. Ours has blown up twice! They came to repair it for free, but I still wouldn't bother again - they are very heavy and very temperamental. When it works, it's fantastic - but it spends a lot of time not working because some little tube somewhere has been dislodged in the process of heaving the thing around. My cleaner swears by Henrys, fwiw!

Hmm, Miele of Seba seem to be in the running. Never heard of Seba, wonder if I can get them here.
I prefer bags tbh, I hate emptying the hoover and seeing all the dead spiders. <<shudder>>
Do spiders die when you hoover them up or can they crawl back out? I always leave the hoover on for half an hour to make sure they are really dead.

I've had a Henrys for the last 20 years and had no problems at all. They are great.

'I always leave the hoover on for half an hour to make sure they are really dead'
I don't hink I've ever hoovered up a spider.

If I have inadvertantly offended any spiderlovers then I apologise, but I hate the buggers and the big ones get hoovered.
Does no one else do this?

Couldn't you just put them outside?
I'm not overkeen on them, especially the big ones with boots on but I'd never kill a spider.
I once hoovered a slug up by accident and was horrified
. I cut open the hoover bag to look for it - have no idea what I thought I could do with it. Give it a bath perhaps? - but the bag was almost full and it had dissappeared into the dust and dirt
. And I hate slugs.

Blimey if it lasted 15 years, I'd buy the same model.
Failing that, Henry is brilliant.

The old one was a cheapy one, my SIL got one at the same time and it lasted about 6 weeks. I think it was a combination of luck and slatternly housekeeping that kept ours going so long.

I can't believe no one's mentioned the Roomba. I haven't got one as I have different levels, but there are threads raving about them.

Miele too after too many years with a completely bloody useless Dyson. We have the Dog and Cat which is great. We have a visiting dog and mostly carpet. A cheaper model by the same brand may be better suited for hard floors, especially if you don't have animals. Can't fault ours actually.
